Q: Spotlight Internet Results Lost After 10.11.5

I updated to 10.11.5 the other day, and now Spotlight doesn't find internet results. I've scoured the Apple Discussions board to no avail. I've now disabled and enabled the checkboxes in Spotlight preferences, reindexed Spotlight, and reinstalled OSX. I'm in America and have everything set to English, so that's not the issue. Oh yeah, and if I boot in Safe Mode it works. I've tried disabling all of the login items under Users & Groups, but it still doesn't work.

I'm out of options to get it working again. Does anyone have any idea what to do?

Here is the Console Log for better reference. This was from a search for "weather plano, tx":

Go to safari > safari preferences in the search tab

    1. Enable the box include search engine suggestions by doing so safari starts sending the search engine your partial search terms as you type them & the search engine send safari search suggestions to show in the results list below the search and address field .

    2. Enable :  quick website search. if you uncheck the box it prevents searching within a site from the address & search field .

    3. Enable the box : include spotlight suggestions , if you uncheck the box safari stops getting suggestions from iTunes , maps , news and more .

    4. Also go to system preferences > spotlight > search results > enable spotlight suggestions , bing web searches , bookmarks & history .

I want to add on one more thing :

    1. Choose system preferences > security and privacy > open the pad lock by entering user name and password.

    2. Enable location services > then click in front of system services an option is there " details " kindly click on it .

    3. A window appears : allow system services to determine your location . enable the two options ( a) safari & spotlight suggestions ( b) show location icon in menu bar when system services request your location .

If you turn off location services on your mac your precise location will not be sent to apple , to deliver relevant search suggestions ,apple may use the IP address of your internet connection to approximate your location by matching it to a geographic region .

I'm in Plano, TX, USA, so that shouldn't be the issue.

I have previously enabled everything you have suggested, so that doesn't appear to be the problem. Any other ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

    Thanks Linc,

I ran the two tests, and it worked both in Safe Mode and when I created a second account. After deleting the second account, it's now working on my main account. Since nothing changed on the main account, I'm not sure why it works...but at least it is working for now.

    Thanks.

It works because rebooting in Safe Mode must have reset a corrupt cache that was causing the problem.
