First, plug your ATV into a TV and set it up with your Apple ID to access your music. Once you verify that it is able to play your music tied your your Apple ID, setup your Apple Remote app, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/remote/id284417350?mt=8,  on your iOS device. You will need to follow the instructions in the app and on the Apple TV interface through Settings (on the ATV) to link the Remote app to your ATV. When this is done, you will be able to open the Remote app, go to Devices, tap Settings>toggle Home Sharing on with the same Apple ID that was setup on your ATV.

Essentially, make sure you are signed into your Apple ID for all purposes on the Apple TV and Remote app, so make sure Home Sharing is set for the same Apple ID on your ATV as well. When all of this is done, you'll be able to open the Remote app, tap on the ATV and browse your music to select desired playlists, artists, etc to play through your system. You can walk about your house and control this through the app so long as you are connected to the same network as your Apple TV. You can then unplug the ATV from the television after this has all been setup. You will be able to "wake up" the Apple TV using your Remote app from then on. Just tapping on the icon for that particular ATV will do this.
