Photos for MacWell it's not a virus because there are no viruses for OS X, however it is possible it is another type of malware. It acts like adware so follow the instructions in Stop pop-up ads and adware in Safari - Apple Support

ApplicationsIt's not a virus and it's not adware. It's a misconfigured ad network. It has nothing to do with anything on your computer. You're probably seeing it on the site smh.com.
