Q: Can I use Time Machine with iCloud Drive?

I want to backup my complete iMac on iCloud Drive using Time Machine. Or is this useless since I can also copy my complete iMac to iCloud Drive and have all my files synced between my iMac and iCloud Drive?

iMac 24, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

iCloud is designed to store offsite for you, at best, a subset of what is on your Mac. NOT the entire contents of your Mac as a backup system like Time Machine will do to an external hard drive.

You are asking about a function like Backblaze or Crashplan. These are cloud services where you upload the entire contents of your Mac to their cloud services, giving you an online backup.

    iCloud is NOT that service.

    Hi,

your response here fits right into the discussion I'm having with you at "iCloud, syncing question". I've not heard of Backblaze or Crashplan. Thanks for the leads.

    You're welcome.

There can be a significant "cost" to the bit-by-bit online backup service to consider. Bandwidth. Not only for the original upload, but the ongoing traffic between them and you. Food for thought.
