Q: "You shut down your computer because of a problem" error on every login

OS X 10.9.3

User has message every time she logs in:

Screen Shot 2014-06-24 at 2.14.59 PM.JPG

She had a few kernel panics yet I couldn't find them in Console in the normal spot, so I went searching for them.

I found them in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and they weren't helpful to me.

I then found the following when looking through logs (ReportPanic could not stat):

JG-Kernel-Error.JPG

I searched and tried the answers I found and none worked.

Such as:

Re: getting startup message "You shut down your computer because of a problem" when no problem existed prior to sit down

annoying message "you shut down your computer because of a problem"

Any help removing this error message on login would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Ran full Apple Service Diagnostics twice and there were no errors.

There hasn't been a kernel panic since removing SEP, yet every time we reboot her machine we get the ReportPanic could not stat in Console and every time she logs in she gets the window saying "You shut down your computer because of a problem" which is all I really want to get rid of and the purpose for my original post.

My guess is the window is popping up because system can't finish writing a log for some reason (as all the panics are not current at this point) and I need help figuring out how to fix.

    Thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ls -Oaen /L*/Logs/D* | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

Waiting for user access to computer.

I just wanted to update that we also booted to safe mode and then rebooted and the error still appeared.

Nothing appeared when running terminal command and pasting to textedit.

Issue may be resolved from random.

User disconnected from Ethernet and rebooted and the message didn't appear.

User repeated procedure.  No error message at login again.

User connected to Ethernet and rebooted in front of me and no error message appeared.

I haven't looked at console logs, yet will try and take a look when user has time.

Those panics were not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:

    1. A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    2. A damaged OS X installation
    3. A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    4. Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
    5. An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
    6. An obscure bug in OS X

You may already have ruled out some of these.

Rule out #1 by starting up in safe mode and then restarting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.

You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place.

Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.

If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.

Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test, if applicable.

In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve starting up from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.

Even if FileVault is not active, an aftermarket SSD may be the cause of kernel panics. Check the manufacturer's website for a firmware update.

Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.

If the system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.

In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.

Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

    Layne,

I've been seeing this lately too. Most recently I got the "You shut down your computer because of a problem" message on restart after I'd done a normal manual shutdown with no activity going on, then restarted an hour later. When I shut down I did have a Thunderbolt-2 dock connected with several peripherals (firewire, HDMI, etc).

Did you ever figure out what was causing your problem?

    Some additional context below:

    -----------

The console shows the typical error message with the notorious "stat" typo, note it's referencing a problem from 2 days prior

    1/12/16 8:29:22.098 AM ReportPanic[223]: ReportPanic could not stat /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Sleep Wake Failure_2016-01-06-135621_John-Air.diag

So I wonder if a sleep/wake problem, which might be related to my thunderbolt-2 peripherals or some other cause from days ago is causing a spurious error message on a normal shutdown/restart.

I went poking around in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ and the file exists:

    Sleep Wake Failure_2016-01-06-135621_John-Air.diag

That file is in fact readable (though my usual startup user doesn't have privileges to access the folder directly), so the "stat" (start) error is weird.

    It reported:

    Date/Time:       2016-01-06 13:56:19 -0600

A bit more followup on my case. I think this might be a red herring (spurious) error message related to a Yosemite bug with handling/clearing sleep-wake error files or expired problem reports.

In my case I found I got the error message with every shutdown/restart even when I had no power connection and no peripherals and was starting as my admin user account.

I cleared the console and did a safe boot (shift-startup) and found these two messages (emphases mine)

    1/12/16 9:06:19.487 AM SubmitDiagInfo[344]: Unable to determine the characteristics of location file:///Users/kateva/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. Error Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=260 "The file “DiagnosticReports” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file." UserInfo=0x7ffe61f6c720 {NSURL=file:///Users/kateva/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, NSFilePath=/Users/kateva/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, NSUnderlyingError=0x7ffe61f6a5e0 "The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory"}

    1/12/16 9:06:19.498 AM SubmitDiagInfo[344]: Removed expired problem report: file:///Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/awdd_2015-12-13-082327_John-Air.awd

Note the .awd extension. I can't find out what this means but I wonder if Yosemite uses this extension for problem reports that are supposed to trigger a "You shut down your computer because of a problem" message on startup. So if Yosemite fails to clear them (permission issue?) then they keep triggering the warning on startup. Looking at the date this one was created about a month ago.

So the next time I see this error message I'll look for something like "Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/awdd_2015-12-13-082327_John-Air.awd" and try deleting it (while also trying to figure out what causes it, my suspicion would be sleep-wake problems arising from my thunderbolt 2 stack peripherals.)

This also fits with a thread where a hardware issue was causing lots of .awd reports to be generated: Can't start up. The real problem is whatever causes the awd reports, the Yosemite bug is that with some systems the old reports don't get cleared up. So an infrequent problem (happens) will cause a persistent error message on startup.

I used the GoTo function in finder and went to /library/logs and removed the diagnosticsreports folder (OSX will recreate one automatically). This has fixed it form me. No more error messages. Thanks for the troubleshooting hints guy!
