You've hit on something that I have seen which I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else in this thread - the message makes a no mention of "48 hours".  It simply states, as you say, having to enter the passcode to activate Touch ID.  I randomly get that to my iPhone and iPad which are continuously being accessed throughout the day, every day.  And before anyone wonders, these are private devices with no corporate affiliation.  I've noticed it off and on for a few months now.  I had wondered if it was related to some requirement based on some elapsed time (and it may be) but that is not referenced in the displayed message - just that, as you state, you have to enter it to activate touch ID.  My guess is it is a bug that has been there for awhile.  But, considering I'm on 9.3.2, Apple appears to be in no hurry to address it.

See the post 2 above yours for the actual explanation. Re: Requirement to enter passcode every 48 hours

Mr. Finch - I'm not sure if that is - so please help me.

As I read the article (and I may be confused here), there are two timers:  1. Requireme to enter the passcode at a minimum of every six days (possibly more often based on other factors such as a reboot, software update, etc) and, 2. Requiremeant to enter passcode should the device not have been unlocked either via passcode or through use of Touch ID in the previous 8 hours.

FIrst of all, as to the 8 hour issue - my phone is locked/sleeping every nite from 10 PM until 7 AM - yet I'm not prompted for a passcode in the morning - Touch ID suffices.  What am I misunderstanding about that timer?

Second, I am being prompted for my pass code to activate Touch ID more often than once every 6 days (more like once every couple of days).

Lastly, I do not see a prompt such as "The passcode has not been used to unlock the device in the last six days and Touch ID has not unlocked the device in the last eight hours.".  No mention of any "time or day" requirement.  Only that I must enter the passcode to activate Touch ID.

Hope I haven"t been terribly confusing in my description.  Clearly I must not be understanding what was explained in the Macworld article.

There is only one prompt; to enter a passcode to unlock the phone. It does not specify a number of days, or hours. It is one generic message. So the article is wrong about that. The exact timing also is not made public, possibly to prevent working around it. For all practical purposes, it occurs at random times that are not predictable. Except that it is always required after a power off or a reboot.

VVery good.  That certainly seems to explain it.  Thanks.
