Q: iCloud Backup size is growing

I apologize if this question has already been asked and answered, but I couldn't find it using the search terms I tried.  I'm having this problem on all my iOS devices, and at least one other device of my "family sharing" family's iOS devices.

Here's the situation.  My iPhone's backup size grows every night.  So, for example, right now it says my iPhone's iCloud backup is 12.7 GB.  However, it says it's next backup size is 1 GB.  Yet, if I force a backup, it will still say the backup size is 12.7 GB, or larger.  Probably larger, as it seems to grow a little with each backup.

I've tried.

* deleted the iCloud backup and forced a new backup

* deleted the iCloud backup for all my devices backing up to my iCloud account and let them backup again at next charge cycle

* deleted the iCloud backup for my iPhone, restored my iPhone to default settings, restored apps and configuration, and let it backup again at next charge cycle

* toggle backing up photo library on and off again in the backup options.

I think this has been happening for months.  At first I just assumed I could no longer backup an iPhone and an iPad on a single iCloud account with the free 5 GB from Apple, so I just bumped it up to 50 GB for $1/month.  Then a month or so ago I realized I had used like 70% of my 50 GB and it was all iCloud backups for 2 devices!  That's when I started trying to fix the problem.

Now, my wife is getting messages about her 5 GB filling up and it's the same thing.  The last backup size is ~ 10 times the size of her next backup size.

We are a "family sharing" family with 5 iCloud accounts tied together, if that matters.

Any help would be appreciated.
