Jun 1, 2016 8:58 AM in response to cofferunby Eric Root,You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.
You will also need to supply more information.
What OS version are you using?
What application are you using?
What happens when you try to open an e-mail?
Have you tried opening in the Safe Mode?

Jun 1, 2016 12:38 PM in response to cofferunby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
I would go one step further.
This Thread is about the app Messages on a Mac.
The Title miss-informs us that iMessages will not open. iMessages is an Account with the Messages.
Having said that lots of the articles Apple provide about Mail talk about receiving messages as well.
Use Mail on your Mac - Apple Support This talk about starting new Messages (in Mail) and uses the same words as the instruction for the Messages app.
On this page which is where I ended up searching for Mail it show the apps in a list on the left.

You can see Mail and Messages have different icons with the Messages app the next one down from Mail.
This Thread is in Mavericks which is the Name given to an older (not current) version of the Mac OS X (10.9.x).
You post is sufficiently lacking in detail that it could also be about Mail on the iOS device that you might have.
