Q: Apple music on ATV3??? When

I subscribe to Apple Music and can play content on my iPhone and Mac, however when it comes to streaming music to my Apple TV 3rd Gen, no. I cannot get the same content to show.

Sure, it shows music I have downloaded to my account or purchased in iTunes, but when it comes to streaming I cannot see any of the music. I thought there would have been an easier way to listen to it, other than Air Play which obviously needs me to have my MacBook switched on. Sometimes I just want to switch the TV on, select Apple TV and listen.

When will it become available to listen to the music I subscribe to and pay for across ALL my Apple devices. I thought that was a selling point for Apple to have the ability to do so. I have been told that I will have to buy the latest generation Apple TV to do this and I am little miffed if this is the case, as the current ATV works fine other than this issue mentioned.

    Hello there,

I am also exactly in the same situation as you guys. Please do not tell me that it is because of the weak hardware that Apple TV 3rd Gen. has. Apple TV's main mission is to stream but we cannot stream music even though we are paying for Apple Music, huh? I'm sorry but it's the most absurd thing about Apple TV. I've bought my Apple TV a year ago and I do not want to have the 4th Gen. since I am not into playing or downloading any Apps on it, but just wanna stream my music, movies, photos etc. and enjoy some YouTube videos. It shouldn't be a big problem to add this feature I think. I even would like to have Siri through Remote App with my iPhone but it is not that critical. I just want to stream my music, that's all. I do not know who to push for that but it is clear that we have to have this right. On the other side even Android users are more lucky because if they have any casting usb sticks, via Apple Music App. they can stream their music but not us!

    Hi there,

I have heard somewhere, that there will be a software update for 3rd Gen ATV, but when I'm unsure. I do agree with your comment about Apple Music and being able to stream across all Apple devices, this is a must, or are Apple not going to update the software to encourage us to buy the latest version of ATV. If that's the case I will have to seriously consider my options.

I own 2 atv3's, and there is no way I'm going to upgrade to the newest version just for Apple music. I do not need Siri on my tv I dont even use it on my phone . I'm also confident that the hardware can fully support streaming seeing that it is basically all it does. I'm disappointed If they do not plan on releasing a update to include Apple Music. I  fully understand other features not working like Siri but their own streaming music service when beats use to be on here.

Add me to the list requesting this.

AirPlay works but sometimes my iPod needs charged and it would be so much more convenient to have this right on the atv.

    Family package.

    Hi,

I just spoke to a senior advisor named Zack at Apple Care, and he told me that ATV3 will never recognize Apple Music. There are no plans to update it to make it possible. Apparently, Apple Music specifies that it only plays on ATV4 - I never saw that specification. So, in the Music app on ATV3, it will never display albums and songs that I've added to My Music on Apple Music.

APPLE'S POSITION: Zack also contends that ATV3 won't stream Apple Music from a device through AirPlay, since it has a DRM check that restricts it from playing music that is DRM-protected. If that were true, streaming through AirPlay wouldn't be an option either. My experience a couple of nights ago seemed to confirm that: I tried to stream an album over AirPlay (the option from the Displays capability in El Capitan) and there was a steady, every-twenty-seconds glitch that made it unlistenable.

SUCCESS: Today I am able to stream music from my laptop more successfully. I had discovered an AirPlay option in iTunes itself (no one I talked to at AppleCare mentioned this to me). When I use it, streaming from my laptop works fine, at least for now. That option is found in the application bar at the top of the window in iTunes - you'll see an AirPlay symbol. Click it and you have the option to play from one source or multiple, and to stream to your AppleTV. When I do that, *it plays smoothly*.

It's not exactly what I wanted, which was to play AppleMusic through the Music app of my ATV3. Streaming from iTunes AirPlay is an acceptable workaround for now, as long as it continues working well.

Doing so will require a major UI overhall to coincide with the present design language that was introduced when Apple Music was brought to the public on our iOS devices. The Music app had a major change made to the interface to prepare for Apple Music's interface.  The 3rd gen ATV isn't getting such an update. The UI is consistent all throughout the OS. It is very much iOS 6, and they would not put an iOS7 UI into a single app on such a UI. It would be too messy.

You all are welcome to believe differently, but it doesn't fit in Apple's design language.

I agree with the UI needing an update to use Apple Music properly but my Apple Music playlists DO appear on the Apple TV 3 but songs cannot be selected to play. It appears to be purely Apple stopping this and nothing else. Streaming music from iTunes on a Mac is no more network intensive than from the web so if I can see the songs I should be able to play them. Bad decision Apple.

I just reviewed their compare screen for the two presently offered Apple TVs in the event that maybe this was advertised differently. It seems to be one of the highlighted features of the latest ATV 4th Gen.
