Q: Ipad and iCloud

I have an iPad 3 which if I check on Apples iCloud  Activation server shows as OFF and ready for new user but on the device itself it still asks for the original users iCloud password.

 

Why does this happen and is there any way to get around this. I don't want to RESTORE the device with iTunes just yet as I think this will brick the device at Activation.

 

The original owner has checked their iCloud.com account and says it does not show up in there as it was removed prior to passing it on to me.

 

Any help please?

    I'm getting popup windows constantly.

     

    ALso under iCloud sub heading the okd users email address shows.

     

    I Cant turn Find my ipad to OFF without original AppleID password.

    You will need to erase the device. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

    OK, just an update to the suggestion above to Erase iPad.

     

    Tried to do this but unfortunately I cant complete this task as its asking for the passwored for the AppleID still on the device

    Earlier you stated that the original owner checked their iCloud status for you, so ask them to provide their password (or enter it for you).  If this is not done, the iPad will be useless to you.

    Yes, I am in contact with the original owner but I am not sure they will be willing to give me their password, they live at the other end of the country to me.

     

    If they did it would solve this issue.

    But, going back to the original problem, why does the Apple Activation server show the ipad as icloud OFF. There must be a reason, something they did wrong or incomplete at the removal stage. Any ideas anyone to avoid this happening in the future? Activation shows the iPad can be activated by the new user- when clearly it currently cant be!!

    They did the process incorrectly as they should have turned off Find My iPhone on the iPad before passing it along to you.  That is all they needed to do, along with Erase All Content and Settings.  To my knowledge there is nothing for them to have done in their iCloud account, just the iPad itself.  Now that you have possession of it, you are bumping into the activation lock set by Find My iPhone.

     

    If you can convince them to give you their password just to let you get past the activation lock, they can always change their password afterwards to isolate you from further access to their account.  You are not going to get around this any other way, you need their password.

    Yes I see.

     

    The iPad came to me dead and I revived it which is why it wasn't carried out on the iPad itself. As far as I was aware they logged into icloud.com, clicked on the green find my iPhone/pad icon, found their device, clicked on Erase and signed out of the account, job done. icloud was ON and showed OFF afterwards, ok I thought we are sorted, got iPad working and bam..Activation issue.

    I checked and from a computer there is no way to turn off activation lock remotely.  From iCloud.com all you can do is Play a Sound, put it into Lost Mode, or Erase (which does not remove activation lock).  From Manage My ID you can only remove Apple Pay or disassociate a device from your account, which does not remove activation lock.

     

    Their password is the only way forward for you.

    Not sure how Ive been doing this but after Erase, there is an option to remove from account, clicked on this and iCloud changed to OFF.

     

    I may need to recheck this, worked on dozens of ipads in the past unless it was a fluke somehow.

    You could be right, I wasn't willing to erase my iPad to fully test this
