    Greetings Terence!

After I upgraded to El Capitan this evening, the iPhoto was asking to be upgraded, only for the App Store to say 'Temporarily unavailable'. This was fixed by your suggestion of trashing the iPhoto app only, and installing it from the Purchases tab. iPhoto 9.6.1 installed successfully but now when I open it, the rainbow wheel spins for a while and says the iPhoto Library is being used by 'mbfloagent' and asks me to quit mbfloagent. Is this too bad?

If this is too bad, then I'll need to restore from my Mavericks backup, taken last night. I was never on Yosemite, if it helps.

    Thanks!

This was sorted by emptying trash, restarting machine and invoking iPhoto.

Now works as expected - thanks for the original tip, TD!!

This Worked!  Thank you.  I was trying to get back to the old iPhotos, and I hadn't updated before upgrading to El Capitan.  I don't have time to learn the new UI of Photos.  Glad I can still edit with Photoshop using iPhoto. (In the new Photos, you can't just hit enter and open an external photo editor.  You need to export a raw copy, then open in Photoshop.  Takes several steps, and was killing my productivity!)

The above directions got my iPhoto back and running (thank you!). However, unlike the original poster I've been using Photos for a couple of months before discovering it did not have all the functionality of iPhoto (specifically, no support for the command functions that allow you to customize a page in photo books by moving/sizing/rotating text and photo blocks). Is there a way to migrate the Photos library back to an iPhoto library?

Did you look under 'Hidden Purchases'?

What version are you updating from? It's only possible if it's a version of iPhoto 11 that has previously been associated with the App Store.

Hello there! I have tried your solution (in this post:

*Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

    *

but iphoto was not on my purchased list. And then when I went to "unhide" it, there was no option to unhide apps under my account info. I don't think I had any apps hidden. Are there any other options to resolve this that you know of?

Unless you had updated some version of iPhoto 9 from the App Store previously you won't be able to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1.

NOTE: the key to this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store. Also be sure there are no versions of the iPhoto app on any mounted external volume.

If you don't quality for 9.6.1 you'll have to start using the new Photos app.  iPhoto is fast becoming incompatible with the system.  As of April 1 of this year iPhoto is not longer able to order print products from the Apple Print Products Store.

The new Photos is very much like iPhoto but with a several of major changes.  There are no more Events (it uses Moments instead), it can be synced between all devices signed in to the same iCloud account and it has much better editing capabilities.

I actually talked to Apple Support and they put iPhoto into my purchases so that I could reinstall.  I don't like the new Photo.  It dumps all my photos together and divides by date.  I want my photos separated by events.  When I pull in a groups of photos, I want them to stay together so I can work on that group into a slideshow.  Also, it doesn't keep the photo title in slideshows.  You have to retype every photo title if you want to show in the slideshow.  I won't be upgrading to El Capitan because I think it will remove my iPhoto.

1 - upgrading to EL Captain does NOT remove iPhoto - it may remove it form the Dock but not from your applications folder

2 - to use iPhoto with EL Captain you must have iPhoto version 9.6.1

3 - iPhoto can no longer order print products from Apple (PrestoPhotos does support books form iPhoto)

4 - with some future OS upgrade iPhoto will probably stop working altogether and then you will be in a mess with no upgrade path

5 - while Photos is certainly different than iPhoto (all new software is different form older software) and some iPhoto workflows will not work with Photos overall it is much better, more reliable and faster and it probably would be good to learn it and migrate now while you can use both during the learning curve

It won't be long before iPhoto is not longer compatible with the system.  Right now it can't order any print products from the Apple Print Products Store and a couple of slideshow themes don't work.    You should investigate migrating to Photos.  Once the differences are understood it's quite powerful and not difficult to use.
