I thought your post was really interesting. Felt a bit like reading about the development of a set of twins... and how they are similar / different :-)

I just completed a 1 mile very brisk pace walk(time was 14:32 per mapmywalk) and it took 14 minutes and 32 seconds, go to check my exercise thing, 1 freaking minute is all that it listed. You cannot tell me that a 4 mph pace does not qualify as exercise.
After I noticed that, I went on a 5 minute walk(same 4mph pace, but just around the block and up the street until I hit 5 minutes) without using the workout app, and I got credit for the 5 minutes.
This is a very serious flaw, and I cannot see any reason to have that app on the watch at all, because it has a fatal bug in it.
wOS2 did not fix the fatal flaw at all.

Sep 22, 2015 4:44 AM in response to mike3775by G3gator,wOS 2 changed mine. On my morning dog walk this morning, I was given 21 minutes of 'exercise' credit. Before OS 2, I would get maybe 2 minutes credit for the same walk. I guess I can cut back now that I am getting more exercise ;-)
There may be something wrong with your watch. Or, maybe the calculation is individualized and your data suggests that 4mph is not enough. But, I don't think that is the case. I would check with Apple about this.

Sep 22, 2015 5:22 AM in response to G3gatorby mike3775,I how it is the watch itself, I sent a bug report in, with all relevant data and will wait and see. I just think it's odd that it will give me credit when not using it, but won't when using it, it's strange

Sep 23, 2015 9:27 AM in response to hawkwoodby Bepirish,I have called, updated to the latest OS2 and unpaired and restarted. The only way it works accurately is in Other. I ran today for 31 minutes - I'm not speedy but I was running - 11 min mile pace. Got 17 minutes of credit in Outdoor Run. I will continue to use Other until they get it fixed.

Sep 23, 2015 10:21 AM in response to Bepirishby Gupster88,It's interesting that people have had better metrics when they don't use the watch's Exercise app, just exercise and watch metrics in the Activity rings. Good point on using "other", I'll try that.
QUESTION TO QUORUM: Have you noticed a lag in the time between exercise and credit? I noticed that after an event, it sometimes takes time to "sync" with my phone. As a simple example, if you watch the "step" counter while walking, there is a bit of a lag on it capturing your activity.

Mine worked original then quit in December when I didn't have watch on. I added some glances too. In winter the walk is slower. My arms move. Phone is in pocket on arm

- Bring your iPhone and Apple Watch to a flat, open, outdoor area that offers good GPS reception and clear skies.
- Check that Location Services is turned on. On your iPhone, tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
- Check that Motion Calibration & Distance is turned on. On your iPhone, tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.
- Hold your iPhone in your hand, or wear it on an armband (preferably) or waistband.
- Open the Workout app on your Apple Watch, and choose Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
- Choose your goal or select Open. Tap Start.
- Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes."

Apr 19, 2016 1:31 PM in response to hawkwoodby Jonathan UK,To credit progress towards your daily Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk.
This applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app.
The definition of a brisk walk varies from person to person and depends upon your personal information. To check that your personal information is accurate and to update it over time:
- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.
During general daily wear and when your iPhone is not taken along on certain outdoor workouts, the Activity app relies on your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) to track movement for the purpose of crediting progress towards the Exercise goal. For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around and also during workouts.
Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of various estimations (including Exercise credit) made by the Activity app and Workout app. It does this by teaching your watch how your arm movements relate to your stride lengths at each of your typical walking and/or running speeds.
If it is not convenient to swing your arm on outdoor walks or runs (perhaps due, for example, to holding dog leads), it may help to take your iPhone with you and track walks and runs using the Workout app on your watch, choosing Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run as the activity type. When Location Services are enabled on your iPhone (Settings > Privacy > Location Services), your watch can use GPS data from the iPhone to estimate your pace and distance covered. However, Exercise credit will still only be awarded by the Activity app when your activity is at least equivalent to a brisk walk.

Apr 19, 2016 1:32 PM in response to hawkwoodby Jonathan UK,If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for your workouts regardless of their intensity levels, track them via the Workout app using Other as the activity type.
This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. During these workouts, Active Energy (calories / kilojoules) will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher.

Jun 7, 2016 2:43 AM in response to hawkwoodby rebeccameek,Hi - new Apple watch user here (in New Zealand). In the first week, I used the Workout app to record my walk to and from work. Activity app would recognise all minutes of my walks under Exercise. In my second week of using the watch, only 4 minutes seems to be uploaded to the Activity app under Exercise. Yet on the "workout" tab of the Activity app, my walk minutes are accurately recorded. In the Health app, my walks show on the dashboard under "Workouts" accurately, but the "Exercise Minutes" are off.
I tried out the "other" Workout app option, and sat quite still while it was recording. Seems I burn calories at the rate of knots when sitting still!! Unlikely.
I have resorted to not using the Workout app at all when I walk now. The Watch seems to recognise what I'm doing (sort of - it thinks I'm walking the dog), so I just go with that. Ultimately I'm not a gym-goer so steps and distance are more important to me. I agree that it doesn't seem to be working as we all expect or, perhaps, its method of operation is not clearly described by Apple.
I am running the latest iOS for the Watch.
