Q: New GPU producing Black Screen

Hi. I recently installed a GTX960 into my system to upgrade from my very old ATI Radeon HD 5770. I have been using Windows through bootcamp for a couple of months with no issues. However, recently one of my HDDs became 'dirty' and the internet informed me to use the osx disk management tool. I tried many other things before deciding to boot into mac, but nothing was working. So I decided to boot into mac (for the first time since I had installed the gpu) however this produced a black screen which leads me to where I am stuck now.

I have already tried going to recovery mode but this produces the same result.

With a bit of research I was able to find that my CPU(s) doesn't have inbuilt graphics so it relies on a graphics card to work.

(If this helps...) My computer is a mid-2010 mac pro with:

  • Two 2.4 GHz Quad-Core "Gulftown" Intel Xeon(E5620) processors with 12 MB of L3 cache

  • 32gb of 1333 MHz ECC DDR3 SDRAM

This is kind of urgent as I require this computer for school work.

To use a GTX960 you need to install drivers and since it is not a Mac-flashed card you will not get a boot screen and thus you can't use the special startups like Recovery mode, Option key and other whey you have to see the screen.

The following lists links for the Nvidia drivers for Mac

You have to reinstall your 5770 card and then install the drivers for Mac. You may have to reinstall OSX.Then reinstall windows via Boot Camp.

I do not really know what you meant by "However, recently one of my HDDs became 'dirty' and the internet informed me to use the osx disk management tool."

If you Windows disk tools on boot camp drive you can destroy the OSX install.

So there definitely isn't a way to force it into windows? Also, Do you think it would be safe to have both plugged in at the same time? Or should I unplug the 960 first?

You can have both inserted/used at the same time if yo have enough power connections.

I know the 5770 has one AUX power connection and do not know if the 960 has one or two. The Mac only has two AUX connections on the Logic board.

My 2009 Mac Pro has the original GT 120 and I added a PC 5770 card.
