Q: Most thinks don't work well with maverick. Is apple pushing me to buy a new mac and a new iphone?

I am really upset about Maverick and APPLE .. Why do they make a new software with too many problems?  As I can see on the forums, I am not the only person facing many horrible problems; I have been wasting my time for the last three days trying to fix many issues. “It is reactionary”    To be honest, I was the one who promoted many good opinions about APPLE, but now definitely, I am not happy at all.  And if the problem continues without proper solutions for everyone, I think many people will be back to others systems, as I will do.

I describe the main issues I have now:

  1. 1.  Now I can't sync iphone with mac using itunes, APPLE obligates me to use icloud, but obviously my data is more than 5 GB, so do I HAVE TO pay for more space? What happens if I can't do it right now?   my question is: is that not enough that I am an apple client, buying a Mac and an iphone?

However, I synced calendars and notes using Icloud, but the surprise is that I can't get my all calendars’ events on my iphone.  So what is happening?  Obviously something is wrong, something is not working well with icloud.  And if I lose my mac now, where is my all data? Because it is not in icloud, either on my iphone.

  1. 2.  I need to update my iphone, but I can’t do it using itunes now, either using my iphone itself because I don’t have enough memory. So now what should I do?  Buy another iphone with more GB? Is what APPLE aim with Maverick?

  1. 3.  I have been having many problems since I update to Maverick, I need to restart my mac many times a day.  It didn’t happen in the past never ever.  One big problem I have is the Internet speed, it is slower and restarting safari is needed many times.  I don’t think Maverick is an advancing technology.

  1. 4.  And what is unforgettable is that you read answers on forums and they recommend to buy a new devices because the old ones doesn’t support Maverick at all.

So if someone can explain me what we should do and what all these mean, I will be happy to hear you.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Why are more people using Mac OS X 10.9 than any other Mac OS X version?

    This categorical statement is false:

Most thinks don't work well with maverick.

The issue most people who have trouble get is not following standard updating practice:

Read http://www.roaringapps.com/ for compatibility of their system.

    Read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669

to find out if your printer/scanner is supported.

Usage of peripherals that drivers have not been updated for 10.9.

Usage of hard drives with built-in backup software or firmware that has not been updated for 10.9.

Not backing up their data prior to installation.

Using a hard drive that is over 85% full.

Installing non-essential anti-virus, firewall, or system cache cleaners, especially the biggest troublemaker, MacKeeper:

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036

Possible hardware issues that lead to kernel panics*:

    http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html

Those who have not updated to 10.9.2 with its combo update, do not know the most stable and secure version of Mac OS X 10.9:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726

If you are not one of those people, then perhaps it would pay to isolate your problem and see what you have tried.

And ignore long threads that say "me too."  Cause few experts want to troubleshoot more than one person at a time.  It becomes nearly impossible in long threads to do so.  If you have an issue, and you aren't Venusiana, or have a solution for them, please start your own thread.

This is not a 10.9 feature alone.   Apple has chosen iCloud as its normal data syncing location.  Unfortunately it limits itself because there are many other internet service providers that provide space.   Chronosync is another popular syncing utility.  You may want to research them and see if they can offer what you need for your iOS version of iPhone or not.  If not, and you have already updated your iOS, then it might pay to sell your iPhone and get one with a lower iOS supported by Chronosync.

    1. 2.  I need to update my iphone, but I can’t do it using itunes now, either using my iphone itself because I don’t have enough memory. So now what should I do?  Buy another iphone with more GB? Is what APPLE aim with Maverick?

We can't guess Apple's policy.  But I have not updated my iPad.  It still is on iOS 5.1.1.  It works fine.  Yes there are Apps I can't use with it, but at least it still works.

    1. 3.  I have been having many problems since I update to Maverick, I need to restart my mac many times a day.  It didn’t happen in the past never ever.  One big problem I have is the Internet speed, it is slower and restarting safari is needed many times.  I don’t think Maverick is an advancing technology.

It sounds like to me you have a very corrupted browser cache, or certain cookies for certain websites need deleting.  Go into Safari menu -> Preferences -> Privacy Details and delete items from websites that don't have passwords you need remembered by the browser.  This should help the browser perform a lot better.  If you have no specific passwords for the browser to remember, there are many Mavericks compatible browsers that may work better.  This though also goes back to my point about 10.9.2.   Backup your data, install 10.9.2 combo, install the 10.9.2 latest security update, if necessary:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1740

And if it still fails, try a different browser, and update your Adobe Flash and Java from http://www.adobe.com/ and http://www.java.com/

    See my listing of browsers*:

    http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html

If all else fails, you can always boot on a USB Flash drive an older Mac OS X version until all your applications have been updated, just to be able to run those older applications.

    1. 4.  And what is unforgettable is that you read answers on forums and they recommend to buy a new devices because the old ones doesn’t support Maverick at all.

Well what do you expect when you running the latest and greatest?  Old hardware may not work with it anymore.

Sometimes it just pays to keep the status quo.

I still have a MacBook Pro on 10.7.5, and an iMac 5,1 on 10.6.8.

    1.  Now I can't sync iphone with mac using itunes, APPLE obligates me to use icloud, but obviously my data is more than 5 GB

I don't understand that. There are only certain things that you must sync through iCloud, and those things - Calendar, Contacts, etc - are not large data users. For large files like photos, music, movies, apps, etc, you certainly can, and should, still sync using iTunes.

    2.  I need to update my iphone, but I can’t do it using itunes now, either using my iphone itself because I don’t have enough memory. So now what should I do?  Buy another iphone with more GB? Is what APPLE aim with Maverick?

I don't understand what your phone being almost full has to do with Mavericks.

If your phone doesn't have enough free storage space to upgrade to the latest version of iOS, either don't upgrade or delete some unused things from your phone.

    3.  I have been having many problems since I update to Maverick, I need to restart my mac many times a day.

That is most likely due to having some bad software installed that is not compatible with Mavericks, or that is crap software in the first place.

This is something that can take some troubleshooting to work out, so I'd advise you to start a new topic to address this issue. On your new topic, describe the problem, and even though I know you're frustrated, try not to show the anti-Apple attitude you have displayed here. That is worse than unproductive, as it will actively cause people here to respond to you negatively.

    4.  And what is unforgettable is that you read answers on forums and they recommend to buy a new devices because the old ones doesn’t support Maverick at all.

If an older device does not support Mavericks, then there are only two options: get a device that does support Mavericks, or don't upgrade to Mavericks. I'm not sure what else you would expect. The fact that only certain hardware is supported is a fundamental law of operating systems, and is not in any way specific to Mavericks.

    Hi Brody,

Thank you for your extensive answer.  I have some comments and need some clarifications too.

    1. I don’t definitely have any corrupted or craft software on my Mac.  Otherwise, I would be here asking for help.  So It is not the cause of my problems. Also, I have ready downloaded the Maverick 10.9.2 and safari 7.0.3 before this discussion.
    2. My sync and icloud issues seem to be solved for now, I will wait this week and see if it is definitively solved.
    3. About internet, I followed all your instructions, but unfortunately, the problem is not solved.  My internet works well, not perfect, quite slower than before, but after 20 min. aprox. It stops to work and I need to restart my mac to get the internet works once again.
    4. You mentioned about this link www.roaringapps.com/.  Could you explain me this in detail, please?  What is the purpose, how does it works? Do I definitely use this?

I read an article recently that suggested Apple was going to bring syncing back to iTunes in the next update according to what the writer had been told.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

Roaringapps.com is simply a list of apps that people have tested on OSX and given their verdict. It is not a complete list as I have found apps that do run that have no verdict, but any apps that are marked bad, if you have them, uninstall or update them.

Installing Etrecheck  from etresoft.com and pasting the output here may help someone to diagnose your problems. My Mac runs like a rocket on Mavericks including the internet but I uninstalled a lot of apps and removed a lot of obsolete launch daemons, startup apps etc on advice here, including getting rid of anything by Google.

When I looked thru the Apple MacBook Pro how To's and it tells you the step by step about the built in app's it talks about Safari how great it is!!!! I need to know if it is and if I get rid of chrome and google will I loose gmail?  I never use the mail Icon (once in a blue moon)! I was told by best buy that its junk!!! and he set it up to sync with google! Im confused Peter!! did anything I just say make since to you??? I hope it did because I have  a lot to learn... and where I live right now there is no apple store in sight to help me right now and the $ for training to help me on how help me figure out how to use all the the things on my pc would coast me a arm and a leg .  thank goodness for the community helping people like us!!! any help you give me is appreciated!!! thanks feather6868

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.

You do not have to use Chrome on a regular basis. Safari is a good browser and will do pretty much everything you want. Getting rid of Chrome doesn't affect your ability to use G-mail. If you are accessing G-mail on the website, you can do that with Safari. You can also add your G-mail accounts to Apple's Mail program so you can receive mail on the computer without accessing via the web.
