Q: Mac Wifi connected but no connection

Hello everyone,

I have a 13 inch Macbook Air OS X El Capitan 250Gb. I am having this Wifi connection problem for the past few weeks and this is what is happening:

My Macbook is connected to the internet. Full bars, wifi signal and speed all normal. But whenever I try to browse sites, it does not load. For example: If I am using Google Chrome then "The xxxxx page isnt working" with ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE error. I tried it on Safari and same thing happens. Also, other internet connection needed applications were not working either. Steam couldn't load anything.

When I tested it on the Safe Boot mode, everything works perfect. I can browse the web, no errors and everything was working fine. And when I restart and normally boot my computer, the problem goes back. I just cant do anything and really stuck in a quagmire. Please help me.

Things I have done so far to fix the issue but did not work:

Resetting the SMC and NVRAM.

Deleted some "plist" files from system configuration and made a new location on the network.

Scanned my Mac for viruses but there is none.

Used Wifi Assisstant and Diagnostics. Says internet connection working fine.

Cleaned and reset my browsers.

Ran First Aid on Disk Utility.

On Recovery Mode, ran all First Aid on my Disk Utility. (The Safari was working fine in there)

Used Onyx to clean my computer.

I have contacted my ISP and they say it is working fine on their end. Somebody please help me I am starting to lose hope and drives me nuts. Thank you.

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), 250Gb

Can you send and receive email?
If yes - then it is not your WiFi but something else

Click option and then click the WiFi icon - take a picture of the drop down - remove personal information if any and post it please

May be a third party software could be the reason or there could be a malware in the system .

Click on go > computer > macintosh HD > library > remove the contents of folders receipts , extensions .

then click on go > hold option key > library > remove the contents of folder safari

Also facebook, youtube and surprisingly this apple support site seems to work, but other sites doesn't. When I use my iPhone to browse any sites, everything works. Thank you.

Okay I have found something different. During my Avast Virus scan, there was a infected file called "exciting" and "guanase". So I put them in my Virus Chest and deleted them, but the weird thing is, they are in my Library. What are those?

Are you using any anti-virus programs? Since it worked in the Safe Mode, that could indicate 3rd party software is causing the problem.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

First of delete any anti virus in your case AVAST and third party software from the system as they are not compatible with mac computer . as observed the issues are created due to multiple apps downloaded by the user that are unidentified and broken .

click on go > computer > macintosh HD > library > opens receipts > select all contents of receipts by using key board short cut command + A , then click command + delete .the contents will move into trash .

In the same way for extensions , do not delete the entire folder .

Now , click on go > hold option key > library > safari  remove the ENTIRE contents that are inside the folder by the same method select them command +A , then press command + delete . all contents will move to trash .

Finally restart from apple logo ,empty the trash .

The reason for performing the above steps is : if any major issues in safari are there it is wiser to remove the contents , so that fresh new contents are recreated once again .

Regarding the files exciting , guanase where are they located ?

    Hello,

I have deleted the contents of Receipts as like you said, but I can't seem to find Extensions in there. The only Extensions I can find is it is in the Computer > Mac HD > System > Library > Extensions. I could not delete Extensions because it says it is needed for the OS X.

Deleted the contents inside the Safari folder. Restarted my Mac and emptied the trash. The issue still persists.

This time, my Google Chrome says "This site cant be reached" with ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED error. And my Safari says 'Safari cant connect to the server".

Regarding the exciting and guanase files, they were in the Go > Computer > Mac HD > Library. I deleted them because my Avast anti virus was showing me it was an infected file.

I'll be the third poster to tell you to uninstall AVAST.

Hello! Yes, I did uninstall Avast and MalwareBytes. Still trying to resolve the issue but seems it is not working very well.

Your  etrecheck report shows you still have AVAST trying to launch. I don't think anyone asked you to uninstall MalwareBytes. Post another etrecheck report after removing all things AVAST related. Did you follow the instructions at the AVAST site to uninstall AVAST or did you just drag it to the trash?.

Also - from the screen capture - you seem to be a very crowded environment with respect to the 2.4 GHz channel - is your router capable of 5 GHz? Can you switch and use that channel instead?
