Q: Late 2009 iMac to new one

I have a 27" iMac (a late 2009 model) which, despite CAD of High Wycombe's efforts, is still not working properly (Mail is a bit erratic & other software & hardware do not  behave as expected. I am considering getting a new iMac and wonder if by connecting the two together I'll transfer the faults of the old Mac to the new one, or whether I'll have to transfer the old to the new by copying each file as I find it. Can anyone help me?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), 27"; about 7 years old.

If you're using anti virus or cleaning apps or you've installed some other form of malware, then yes it's very likely that you'll just transfer the problem to the new Mac. I don't know what kind of help or advice you've gotten but it might be best to take one more look at why your Mac isn't performing up to par. Run and post an EtreCheck report so we can get a look at what might be going on.

Prey? Why use this third party software instead of the software already provided by Apple? If your Mac is lost or stolen - Apple Support

Your Mac doesn't need anti virus, cleaning or additional security software. Adding these third party applications will slow your Mac to a crawl and eventually make it so unstabe it will be unusable....basically a brick. You mentioned a CAD of High Wycombe in your first post as trying to help you.....if they didn't identify these glaring problems you should stay away from them as they have no idea what they're doing. BTW I have the same late 2009 iMac with 16Gb of ram and my Mac runs great.

Hello Mike, Thanks. I'll do as you suggest. I've used CAD as they are Mac approved and John Lewis of High Wycombe use & recommend them. BTWI have the same Mac, with the same RAM as you, so I'll do as you say (it's cheaper than a new Mac!)

Not sure I follow, but it doesn't matter.

ONe more important thing, your hard drive is getting dangerously low on available space, you need to free up some space by moving large files, libraries and other unneeded or unused data and applications off of the boot drive.
