Q: WIFI channel width

Hi,

I'm using an iPhone 6. To improve data transmission I set my router/ repeater to a wifi channel width of 40MHz at 2.4GHz. PC and notebook that are able use this channel width w/o setting. My iPhone doesn't. Is there any chance to set iPhone to 40MHz channel width. Up to now I didn't find any setting.

Thx in advance.

What error message does your phone say when you try to connect to your network?

Do you have a dual band router?
If so, I highly recommend 5Ghz over 2.4ghz for better performance.

Lastly, the iPhone shouldn't care about the 40mhz channel width as my i5S is running just fine on it at 5Ghz
I can test 2.4ghz later, but you may want to reboot your router and iPhone and then reset your network settings if you're still having trouble.

    Thanks for your reply.

There is no error message. Connection works fine at all. But only with 20MHz bandwidth.

My router only speeks 2,4GHz so no chance to use 5MHz. I can see that other devices use 40MHz channelwidth except the iPhones/ iPads. Although I set the router/ repeater to 40MHz, they only use 20MHz.

Rebooting of the router or the phone doesn't make any difference.

    Hi ervau,

There are no device specific settings for this, the channel width is only set at the router. Apple actually recommends that you use 20 MHz only for your router and your close neighbors would appreciate it also. Most routers these days only let you select 20 or Auto and Auto only defaults to 40 when there are no other radios around on the same channel. The 2.4 band is very crowded, it is used for Bluetooth, cordless phones and a myriad of other devices. When a router is set at 40 it hogs the whole bandwidth for that channel and those adjacent to it causing interference. There are only three discreet channels, 1, 6, and 11. All others are a combination of those. I have my router 2.4 band set at 20 and my 5 band at Auto. Here are Apple's recommendations for router settings:
