Q: Quicktime Player can no longer record System Audio

  • Quicktime Player 10.4 (855)
  • OS X El Capitan 10.11.5
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inch, Mid 2014)

New audio recording or new screen recording files no longer record nor reproduce system sound.  Both can record the build-in microphone.

The issue can be reproduced logged in as a different user.

It did work well at some point, maybe some recent upgrade broke it (?)

Suggestions to troubleshoot?

QuickTime Player when doing a screen recording of the video has never been able to record the system audio, it has only been able itself to record line-in audio.

However it used to be possible to use a free third-party tool called SoundFlower to get round this problem, unfortunately SoundFlower no longer seems to be being developed and does not seem to be El Capitan compatible due to the new SIP security feature of El Capitan.

An alternative to SoundFlower that should do the same thing and is El Capitan compatible is LoopBack from RogueAmoeba. See - https://rogueamoeba.com/loopback/
