If you want more years install an SSD (replace the hard drive) the improvement in performance is significant

Hey there. I'm also having the same issue on my 2009 MacBook, running Yosemite. I went ahead and did the test. These were my results and any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need more RAM. 4 GB seems to be the consensus for minimum RAM. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

My 15" mid-2009 MBP is running stupidly slow and I found this thread. What is EtreCheck and how safe is it? I looked on its site and clicked to download and try it, but it was taking waaaaayy too long to download (my computers, its download size, my internet speed - who knows why), so I cancelled the download.

I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for.

And if it's that good, it begs the question: why doesn't Apple have its own version of something like EtreCheck to diagnose what is going on with my computer - whether it's the OS (upgraded to El Cap 10.11.4 a couple weeks ago and have no expertise at all in determining what problems the upgrade has caused), the internet connection from my provider, one random file or program that is causing me so many problems, or a dust particle in the room.

I upgraded to as much RAM as my computer allows, and even after that, I didn't see any sustained improvement in performance. Maybe a few weeks, then slowed down as if I didn't even add it. And my hard drive is not full. Nowhere near full. I am not a gamer. I do not download videos and movies. I don't even stream movies or tv on the computer.

    Any ideas are welcome.

    Hello Tricia_S,

It is a diagnostic tool I wrote to consolidate various bit of information about your system and display the most relevant parts on a single page. The idea is that it will help someone here on the discussion forums identify your problem, or likely causes, more quickly than having to ask you technical details about your machine. It is designed to be safe and to prevent disclosure of any personal information. Originally, it never made any change to your system but I had to relax that rule due to the ongoing onslaught of adware. EtreCheck will allow you to easily delete any adware it finds.

It is a very small file. It should only take a few seconds to download.

Alas, that would be speculation and is not allowed as per the Apple Support Communities Terms of Use.

I upgraded to as much RAM as my computer allows, and even after that, I didn't see any sustained improvement in performance. Maybe a few weeks, then slowed down as if I didn't even add it. I suggest starting your own question about this problem. It is never a good idea to piggy-back on someone else's question. This question is more or less solved so most people aren't going to look at it any more.

Thanks! I appreciate the reply. EtrCheck finally installed and I ran a report. Posted the results in a new question to Apple Support and hope it gets a few responses.

Hi Csound1, I appreciate you reading my post in this thread. I came across users' positive experiences with EtreCheck, so I decided to run it. I started a new discussion with the report results. If you feel your expertise could shed light on the slow performance of my MBP, I invite your input.

You might want to consider starting a new discussion in the El Capitan community. Please post what problems you are having that led you to post an Etrecheck report and you can post another Etrecheck report.

I don't see any known trouble makers in your report.
