Q: Apple TV streaming from iMac

Hi,

Supposedly it is possible to stream contents from iTunes, in a Mac, to an Apple TV, when they are in the same network.  I did it pretty well with my Apple TV 2nd generation.  However, when I bought the Apple TV 3rd generation, it does not recognize any computer in the network.  I am using an iMac running El Capitan, and the local network is supported with three Apple routers.  The Apple TV is connected via WiFi.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Sergio.

Confirm the you enabled Home Sharing in iTunes.

You might need to restart your equipment, too.

Please describe your network configuration. What modes are the three routers using?

Have you checked for the usual problems described here: Get help with Home Sharing - Apple Support. Especially check the firewall on your Mac.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  I confirmed that home sharing in iTunes is enabled.. I have also restarted the computer and even rebooted the Apple TV.  But it does not work.

3 Apple routers? Are the configured to bridge the network, are they connected by Ethernet or what.

    Thanks Diana for the reply.

In few words, the network configuration is:  I have an Airport Time Capsule connected to the internet with WPA/WPA2.  From the Airport Time Capsule, there are another Time Capsule and three Airport Express.  One of them serves the Apple TV.  All are connected via DHCP.

The firewall is enabled but it has been the same configuration than before.  With a former Apple TV 2nd generation the connection with iTunes were smooth and  the problem came with I connected the 3rd generation.  Is weird.

I will check the link.  Thank you.

They are bridges, but are connected via WiFi... I don't know if that works..

IT sounds like they may act as repeaters, do all your access points have the same network names. The Apple TV appears to struggle with repeaters.

If you still haven't resolved your problem, you may need to check the settings on your Mac firewall. Home Sharing requires that the ATV be able to connect to the Mac on certain ports, because the Mac is working as a server in this scenario. The link I referenced gives the specific requirements. OS updates may have enabled the firewall. As a quick test, you could disable it completely, to see if ATV can then see the Mac.

Also, your WiFi performance might be improved if you dropped WPA. Try enabling only WPA2-AES (CCMP) on your router and on all the access points and repeaters. This means no TKIP, only AES.
