It sounds like you're seeing only your contacts' phone numbers instead of their names when using Messages on your iPhone. The following Knowledge Base article is a great resource for troubleshooting. These steps offer a great place to start:
If you can‘t send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime, then sign back in:
- Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
- Go to Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
- On your iPhone first, sign back in to iMessage and FaceTime.
- Sign back in to iMessage and FaceTime on your other devices.
{...}
Restart your device and check for updates
- Restart your device.
- Check for a carrier settings update.
- Check for an iOS software update.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers.
