Q: Transfer one book, not entire library

Is  there a way to transfer one book from my iPad to my iPhone without transferring all the books?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.3.1, Ipad to iPhone sync

Yes - you have a couple of options:

    1.    Open iBooks on your iPhone, and open iBooks. In the Books or All view, click on Title, and then click on the Cloud next to the book you want downloaded to your phone.

    OR

    2.     Hook your iPhone up to iTunes on the computer you sync with, click on the device, then in the sidebar under the Settings group, click on Books. On the Books tab, select the book you want to sync, and then sync the device.

Even though iBooks (and PDFs) are now stored in the iBooks app, what gets synced to your iDevices is still controlled via iTunes. That's where you control which ibooks content gets copied to your d vice.

For PDFs to properly sync, make sure you enables iCloud Drive.

    Thanks, Gail.

Did as you suggested in option one, but there is no cloud near the titles - or anywhere on the page.

As I'm traveling with both my iPhone and iPad (where most of my books are stored), using iTunes is not an option.

Are you signed into the same Apple ID in the iTunes & App Store that you used to purchase the Books on the iPad? If so, then if the books are not on the device, this is what you should see:

As you can see, two of my books are on the device, but two are not. The two with the little cloud next to the title are the ones that I can click on to download. I'm not sure if this would affect your being able to see them on your device, but check Settings>Books, and make sure that the "Allow Books to Access" Cellular Data is turned on.

I would also suggest that you select the All option in the top dropdown as opposed to just the "Books" one. When I select the "Books" one instead of "All", I only see the Harry Potter book available for download (go figure....)

Thanks, but this doesn't work for me.

All of my books were downloaded from a public library (over 600 to date), then copied to Dropbox, and from there added to iBooks on my iPad.  (Books are deleted after they've been read, so the number on the iPad is not that large.)

Interestingly, they wind up in iTunes after I do a backup.  So if I were home, I could easily take the books I want to put on my iPhone from my computer. But when I'm 6,000 miles away from home, this isn't possible.

Since iOS doesn't have a file system that one can export files from,  I wonder if anyone has found a way to extract a book and put it into an email or into Dropbox.

Oh. I thought you were talking about actual iBooks, not just the app.

Have you looked into using iCloud Drive to house your books (or some of them)? Obviously this won't help you right now, but it may be something you want to look into when you get home:

iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support

Don't know how large a book is, but note that iCloud Drive has a 15GB limit per individual file. Also, you need to make sure that you have enough iCloud Storage to house your books. If you are only keeping a few on there then they may work with your free 5GB that you get with iCloud. If you want to house more, you would want to purchase more storage to enable that:

I was talking about actual ePub books, not the app.

Fiction ePub books range from around 500kb to 1.5mb.  Tech manuals, cookbooks, and the like with many graphics can be 3 to 5mb or more. So space isn't usually an issue - it would take about 750 bestsellers to use just one gigabyte.

After my books are downloaded, I copy each one into Dropbox, which holds the books and when I want to put one on my iPad or iPhone, I just click on it and send it to iBooks.  It's even easier than using iCloud.

I can borrow books directly on my iPhone, but they have time limited DRM, which I can only modify with software on the computer.

Thanks for all your suggestions. They are greatly appreciated.

So, sounds like iCloud Drive may be the way for you to go. Again, you can put any type of file on it as long as that file does not exceed 15GB, so you should be able to put as many books as your available iCloud Storage will allow.
