Q: How do I filter only favorited photos from within a specific album or folder?

I was used to using Aperture prior to Apple Photos. There was a great feature of starring the pictures that helped a lot the editing/choosing process. This feature isn't available in Apple Photos, although I like this new software, I find the process of choosing which pictures are going to be used from a specific situation very poor. the closes feature to the stars is the Favories, but the only way to use it is on the favorites tab, I couldn't find a way to choosing the photos I'm actually going to keep in a specific album.

Anyone has any idea on how to improve the pictures selection or how to better use the Favorites feature?

thanks a lot

I am using keywords for ratings, as described in this user tip:   https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8531

To be able to filter for "Rating is at least ****" I had to rename the keywords that the migration created from "5*" to "5*****"".

Keywords can be assigned with one key click  from the keyword manager.

And i can search for the text "****" or similar using a smart album. It should be possible from the search field, but that is currently simply broken. If I want to find exactly 4 start photos I search for 4****, but to find "at least 4 star" I search for ****. This will find the 5**** keywords as well.

I tested this last night - this searches for ALL photos with that rating, even if you're in an album.  Here is the workflow I'm trying to solve for:
    - import 200-300 photos

    - quick review with a 'favorite' or 'star' rating to identify first pass of my good photos

    - second review with keyword or different rating to identify photos that need adjustments

    - filter by the good photos (tagged as above)

    - publish to Flickr

With the new version of Photos I can do a review and add favorites but I can't look at that particular import and then filter to favorites.  I have to look at ALL favorites, find the most recent, and then publish to Flickr (which also doesn't work).  Yesterday I had both a softball game (260 pics) and a rugby game (254 pics) so being able to find one set vs the other is really difficult.  iPhoto offered a search option from within the search box.  Photos search is across ALL your photos, not the subset, i.e., album, you've filtered on to start.

The ratings idea you outlined provides the ability to replicate the existing rating feature in the other applications but it doesn't offer the ability to search those ratings within a subset of photos.

The search is currently broken in Photos. It is buggy.

to search in a current selection we have to create an album from the selection and use the "album is" constraint in a smart album and combine it with the search. I hope the search bug will be fixed in the next release.
