Q: Final Cut Pro x 10.2.3 won't open on OS X 10.11.5

Hey guys,

For the past 6 hours I have been trying to get Final Cut Pro X to launch. This is the only screen I get: Screen Shot 2016-06-06 at 14.55.13.png

It just stays like that and there is no moving text indicating the startup progress.

The system in question:

I have tried:

  • Uninstall / fresh reinstall, multiple times.
  • Trashing Prefs / repairing Prefs
  • Letting it load for 1 hour
  • Moved Library to another Mac, Mac Pro 5.1, with FCPX = It worked and library was perfectly intact
  • CMD + OPT Launch
  • OPT + Click library Launch

At this moment I'm at a loss and I hope you guys can help me out!

I would uninstall with this app and then download once again.

    Hey Russ H,

Thanks for the quick reply. I have tried that twice now and I still get the same result.

If anyone else has an idea, please!

Try making a new, clean, admin user.

    Did you use FCS Remover?

Yes, I did. I have done the complete uninstall / reinstall method using FCS twice now and I stil get the same result with FCPX hanging and a beachball mouse when hovering over it.

And did Final Cut work properly prior to El Capitan?

    Hey Russ H,

Yes, it did. I never had any problems with it before.

It stopped working last Friday. I was working on a project and I noticed that the FCPX startup sequence kept increasing. All of a sudden it would not launch anymore and I thought it had something to do with the project becoming to big but it's just a 01:24 minute video... I am editing the video from an external SSD drive through FireWire 800. I one and checked the library on my Mac Pro 5,1 and it just launched as normal and the project was perfectly intact.

Could it be that the video card is dying? I am working on a 2011 MacBook Pro...

Don't know whether it would produce those symptoms or not. Run Apple Hardware Test. Try Tom's advice on the new user.

    Hey Tom Wolsky,

    Thanks for your suggestion.

I have tried that and for a moment I thought it would work. When I launched FCPX, on the new admin account, the auvtool started but after it was done I still got the blank FCPX startup screen...

I tried starting up FCPX via the Terminal to see if I would get any errors. I got a couple of AU errors. Deleted them and now I get a lot of these errors upon startup:

kernel-pool:363:36: error: use of undeclared 'blend'; did you mean 'blend'?

            vec4 blend = unpremultiply(sample(blend, samplerCoord(blend)));

                                              ^~~~~

                                              blend

Sounds like all the AU plugins have to be disabled.

    That did it! Thanks!

    This is what I did:

    1. Backup all AU's
    2. Remove all AU's
    3. Use FCS Remover to uninstall FCPX
    4. Empty Trash
    5. Restart
    6. Fresh install FCPX
    7. Launch FCPX
    8. Everything works again!
    9. Figure out which AU's I want to keep...

    Once again, thanks!
