Q: How can I get Safari to work properly again?

I just updated my software yesterday (as being prompted for a very long time) and today safari 9.1.1 (OSX 10.9.5) is repeatedly crashing on my iMac. this never happened before yesterday. I have been reluctant to update because I thought I would have to upgrade to El Capitan at the same time and had heard bad reviews regarding iPhoto issues on El Capitan. Finally I updated without the upgrade. Now I get constant messages "Safari Web content quit unexpectedly"  How can I get Safari to work properly again without upgrading to El Capitan? Here is a screen grab of what comes up when I check what was updated. I am lost!updates_screen_grab.jpg

Force Quit Safari ( command + option + esc keys). Then restart holding the Shift key.

If that doesn't fix it, download and runMalwareBytes. Malwarebytes was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC. It gets rave reviews and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac.

EDIT: You wrote: I updated without the upgrade

That's not possible. Please check Apple menu > about this Mac to see what version OS X you are running and Safari menu > About Safari to check version.

Yep, I don't think those updates went through, as the screen grab shows (hard to read, I know) it lists 6 incompatible updates. But trying to update those is the only thing that has changed unless I have a virus. I will check. I did the force quit and restart and it successfully loaded almost all of my bookmarked sites except 4. So about 2/3 positive. I will check the MalwareBytes and report back. Thanks!

That means there was adware/pop-ups. Again, what version of Safari are you running and what version of OS X?

OK, I understand. My mistake, you can download Safari 9.1.1 on your system. It still seems to me to be adware/pop-ups that affecting your Safari. Have you tried the shift key or running Malwarebytes yet? One or the other, or both should fix it.

First, never use any kind of "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software on a Mac. That's how you cause problems, not how you solve them.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    Step 1

For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Step 2

In the Console window, please clear the search box, then select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION User Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway. If the report is only a few lines, make sure you cleared the search box.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Your problem has nothing to with malware, obviously.

Please back up all data before proceeding.

Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.

Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select

              FileRestore Standard Fonts...

You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.

Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

    Linc Davis,

When you say, "Please back up all data before proceeding." do you mean back up everything on my MAC or the just fonts?  In either case,  I cannot do this just now but appreciate your expertise. I guess i don't need to know why my fonts would create this issue in safari--sounds bizarre and unrelated but I know practically nothing and you are a level 10!  So I trust you, just have to delay this for now...I will have to use chrome until then, (safari is working OK, but inconsistent) and if all that data told you the problem is with my fonts, then I will deal with them after I do the backup!

Thanks for your help. Will report back when I get this done...

You need to back up all data that you intend to keep, regardless of whether you follow the rest of the instructions or not. You will eventually lose any data that isn't backed up, no matter what you do.

What do you mean I will eventually will lose all the data on my Mac no matter what? You are really scaring me now.  Are you telling me that somebody is going to hijack my Mac for ransom or that eventually my Mac is going to crash and I'm gonna lose everything? All from what is going on now with my Safari Issues that you attribute to problems with my fonts? Please explain

Every storage device eventually dies. When it does, it can and usually does take all the data it holds with it to the grave. Other things can go wrong and cause data to be lost, such as unintended deletion. The most basic rule of computing is to back up. You can't meaningfully use a computer at all without backups. There's nothing special about your situation. The rule applies to everyone.
