Q: My photos didn't load when I restored from the cloud on my replacement phone

I have an iPhone 6s plus. I received my replacement phone and did a restore from the cloud. Only some of my photos downloaded. Most of them just show up as blank grey squares.

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 9.3.2

    virginiafromnew caney,

I would be happy to help with your missing photos. If you are using iCloud Photo Library, your photos and videos are not stored within your iCloud backup. Please navigate to iCloud.com, choose Photos, and see if your photos show up here.

If you do see all of your photos here, this means that you're using iCloud Photo Library. Take a look at this website for more information:

    Your photos

In iOS 8.1 or later with iCloud Photo Library turned on, your photos and videos are stored in iCloud. They aren’t included in your iCloud backup. After you restore your device, connect to Wi-Fi and turn on iCloud Photo Library by going to Settings > iCloud > Photos. Your photos and videos will begin to download.

If you do not use iCloud Photo Library, this means that your photos and videos are stored within your iCloud backup. Since you are seeing those blank grey squares, this means that your device may still be actively restoring from your iCloud backup.

This website goes over some steps to take when restoring from an iCloud backup is taking a long time:

Restoring my device from an iCloud backup is taking a long time

Restoring from a backup might take a while because of the size of the backup or the speed of the Wi-Fi network. For example, iCloud can take approximately 1 to 4 hours per gigabyte during a restore process.

There are several steps you can take:

    • In iOS 8 or later, check the progress of the transfer on your device under Settings > iCloud > Backup. If the restore process is underway, the iCloud Backup setting is dimmed.
    • Make sure that your device is connected to the Internet with reliable Wi-Fi.
    • Make sure that your device is plugged in to a power outlet.
    • Check the Apple progress bar that appears while transferring a backup.

    Regards.
