Q: Apple Hardware Test not starting in El Capitan-10.11.5

Imac- late 2009.

El Capitan 10.11.5.  2.66 GHz.  16 GB DDR3.

 

Trying to check for hardware issues.  Turned Imac off and turned back on holding the D key till grey screen started.  Booted normally. 

Held D till booted- nothing.

Held Option and D- nothing.

 

Suggestions?

Found disk.  Do I simply insert and reboot with D key down?

Do not want to reload original OS.
