Q: Removing a virus? Mackkeeper?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have seen this article. I have gone through the steps. I changed Mackeeper to Read and Write, but it still won't go into the trash. When I try to put it there, it says it may be damaged, and the icon remains in Applications. I do a global search for other Mackeeper icons, and there are none. In the past I have tried to remove Mackeeper, apparently unsuccessfully. I see no Safari Preference Extensions or Cookies relating to Mackeeper. I'm not even sure Mackeeper is causing this. There is still a Mackeeper icon in my Applications folder, that refuses to get thrown away. Think I need virus remover software, or something. By the way. Using Safari. 7.0.6

The exact message I got when I tried to put Mackeeper in the trash is:

The operation can't be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File>Get Info, make sure "Locked" is deselected, and then check the Sharing and Permissions section. When yo are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again. I did. Same results.

What do you think of Onyx?

Ok...I downloaded it, but haven't executed anything yet. It's telling me fifty jillion permissions need to be reset. I don't know what the heck it's referring to. I am not well-versed in OSX. I just want to get rid of this %^&*($  virus. Will OnyX do that? Don't want to blow my head off in the process.   TnT

Apparently I can't even do this. I try to login to this conversation on that Mac (I'm on a different one) and it automatically tells me to upgrade Media Player or some other application, with no decline option. I finally dug beneath the windows, got to this discussion and tried to download EtreCheck, and it said it doesn't appear to be a valid download. My screen is filled with virus warnings and even an audible warning, with a phone number to call.   TnT

Help! I'm in really bad shape. My Mac is taken hostage with this virus. I need to know how to get rid of it. The MacKeeper icon won't go into the trash. It says it's apparently damaged, or something else.   I have restarted ten times or so, and within a minute, a bunch of warning windows opens up, with a number to call. 18443343144. Says my computer ID is 88273.
