May 26, 2016 10:27 AM in response to dwmitziby léonie,Is your iTunes Library an iCloud Library? The songs need to be stored locally to be visible in the Media Browser in GarageBand. If the songs you want to use are in iCloud, click them to download them before you open the Media in GarageBand.
And if you did not enable "Share XML" in the iTunes Preferences > Advanced, try if enabling this option will help:

Jun 6, 2016 11:29 AM in response to léonieby 53Chevy,I am on Garageband '09 (v5.1) and iTunes 12.4.0. Recently, Garageband ceased being able to see iTunes. My music is not on the cloud.

Jun 6, 2016 12:46 PM in response to léonieby léonie,Which OS X version do you have? Some features of the newest iTunes will work only on OS X 10.10.3 or later.

The requirements for iTunes 12.4.1 do not say anything about the compatibility with older applications.
I tested with GarageBand 10.1.2 and GarageBand 6.0.5, and there it is working well with iTunes 12.4.1.

Jun 6, 2016 1:17 PM in response to 53Chevyby léonie,Your GarageBand version has been released in 2009 for MacOS X 10.5.6. The GarageBand version for your current OS X 10.11.5 is GarageBand 10.1.2. Apple dropped the support for older iLife applications with Yosemite and El Capitan. Older iphoto versions and iMovie versions keep crashing. I'd expect GarageBand '09 to have issues as well on El Capitan, but I cannot test it.
But try to find out, if there is a problem with your iTunes Library. Can applications access the iTunes Library that have been updated for El Captan? For example Photos for Mac or Keynote?

Jun 7, 2016 2:10 PM in response to léonieby 53Chevy,Thank you for your help. I gave up, sadly, and just downloaded Garageband 10. GB10 does now see iTunes and I will relearn GB because it is tweaked just enough to look differently but function pretty much the same.

Jun 7, 2016 2:22 PM in response to 53Chevyby léonie,GarageBand 10 has some interesting new features, like smart instrument- (smart drummers, smart strings, arpeggiators, and the midi draw area.
A few other features are now missing: podcasts, sound effect instruments, some vocal patches.
Keep the older GarageBand version installed, so GarageBand 10 can find the older loops and sounds.
