It doesn't mean you can't use the service for the free trial period and then cancel when that period is up. The day before the three months are up, cancel your free trial or subscription, and then you won't be charged for anything.

I would say that a little differently: you won't be charged unless you forget to proactively cancel before the three months is over.
It will not stop automatically, which of course is exactly why they want your credit card in the first place!
