Q: Photos: How go from Aperture to Photos

As support for Aperture will be gone I need an alternative to Aperture. (Ping léonie)

Background

I have two alternatives in mind. Either Lightroom or Photos.

I gather that the Lightroom development is such that Lightroom DVD’s no longer exist as standalones, but only as a subscription with a monthly fee.

Objective

My objective is primarily to keep my photos chronologically sorted in projects (aperture terminology). I seldom work with individual photos. When I do i might crop them or use the “effects” alternative in Aperture adjustments. Not more than that.

I also want to keep the adjustments I have earlier made when I move my Aperture library to the alternative program.

Info on my library

My library contains 85 000 photos. I do not use RAW. The photos are jpg

When I have made an adjustment I am prepared to let the original go. I do not need to get back to the original. The created version is welcome to be the new “original”.

Where I stand

  1. 1. I have found no way to make the transfer of photos smooth and time efficient (when testing for Lightroom I bought and tried the “Exporter for Aperture” but that one seems to be as time consuming as any and it tilts if exporting larger amounts at the same time).
  2. 2. I have seen nowhere decent evaluations or advice on how to go about the transfer.
  3. 3. I am on the verge of giving up and am leaning to settle for the Photos program
  4. 4. But I have still to see advice on how to move the library in a manner that saves the adjustments, keeps the “projects” and maintains the chronological order of the “projects”

My question

I need advice (and help) on how to go about moving my photo library from Aperture to Photos achieving the objectives above in a smooth and timely manner.

(MBP retina etc etc + Yosemite)

I gather that the Lightroom development is such that Lightroom DVD’s no longer exist as standalones, but only as a subscription with a monthly fee

You can still purchase Lightroom as a stand-alone application without a subscription.

This support document describes, how Photos handles an Aperture library:

How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

The transition will preserve all edits, keywords, your albums.

The projects will be handled differently. Photos uses "moments" as the basic library structure. Each photo and all its versions will be in one one moment, just like the projects in aperture.    But while you could move photos between projects in Aperture and name the projects, the moments are created automatically.  Photos will automatically collect all photos taken at the same time at the same location in one moment, and related moments will be a collection. All collections from the same year will be collected in a Year view.

This will give you a fully automatic chronological view of your photos.  You can create albums and folders of albums, also smart albums.

Basically you migrate the Aperture Library by dragging the library onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

But have a look at this user tip:  Notes on Migrating an Aperture Library from Aperture to Photos for Mac
