Q: My keychain.app file says it’s not valid.

My keychain.app file says it’s not valid, thus I cannot change anything. I tried permissions, but get the invalid file message again.  How do I get back to a valid file or fix the one causing the trouble? I've checked Time machine, but it doesn't go back far enough.

    Hi manferret!

It's important to have Keychain working correctly, so I'm happy to help!  Though the title of this article addresses a different situation, this is what I would recommend doing since you're seeing that error:

If your Mac keeps asking for the login keychain password

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities.

    Cheers!

What you said is good, judysings. I can create a new login keychain, but  because the keychain.app file is read only and won't let me change permissions or anything else, I'm forced to reset the login file, but that zaps the previous file. I must confess to being a foolish semi-geezer who maybe, somehow, some way, managed to FUBAR the keychain.app. If only that cursed file could be replaced, I could go back to being a normal person rather than the obsessed madman I've become. Thanks for your help. I'll remember your advice once I ... (you already know about that.)

    Regards,
