Q: iTunes takes a long time to start up since I upgraded to Windows 10

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 a few months back.  Ever since then, iTunes takes like 10 minutes to start up.  I tried setting to compatibility mode for Windows 7 and other versions.  I have tried running it as Administrator.  Nothing seems to work.  Is there some sort of log where I might be able to see where it is hanging up on startup?

Thanks,

Jim

You should try removing iTunes completely. Follow this article:

Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later - Apple Support

The download and install the latest iTunes 12.4.1 from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

I had done that before, but I went ahead and did it again exactly per the instructions.  It is still doing it.  What gets me is that you can open task manager and see that iTunes is running, but there it is using 0 CPU time.  It looks like it's waiting on something that ends up timing out.  After rebooting and such and letting the computer settle, I ran iTunes at 9:13 AM.  At 9:27 AM it finally showed up on the screen.  Anything else I can try?

Try opening iTunes in its safe mode by holding down ctrl+shift as you launch it. You could also try signing out of the iTunes store to see what effect that has on launch time.

I had tried safe mode before.  It took so long that I killed the process.  I had high hopes for logging out of the store, but that didn't seem to make a difference either.  During all this, I uninstalled iCloud and reinstalled it.  I have noticed that it is also rather sluggish when launching.

Have you checked Windows event logs for anything related iTunes problem?

How did you install Windows 10? I personally never like upgrading old OS to new OS without a complete hard disk format. Lots of things can go wrong if I choose to upgrade over existing OS. You can try installing Win10 on a spare hard disk, if you got one available.

Windows 10 got pushed to me.  I was on Windows 7.  Wish I had stayed really.  At this point, I do have all the quirks worked out of Windows 10 except iTunes and iCloud.  They both technically work, I just have to run iTunes 10 minutes before I need it.  It would be nice if there was a startup log somewhere that might show what step it hangs on.

As far as error log, there are only two errors and I think they got generated during the uninstall when it had to shut down running dependent services:

Application 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\secd.exe' (pid 1992) cannot be restarted - Application SID does not match Conductor SID..

    and

Application 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\APSDaemon.exe' (pid 6856) cannot be restarted - Application SID does not match Conductor SID..

After the uninstall, the Apple Folder under Common Files was gone so I think those errors are not important.

Take a look at Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components from my iTunes troubleshooting tip. It's possible you've already performed all of the actions that I recommend there but there are a couple that aren't included in Apple's description.

On your first post you said "I have tried running it as Administrator". Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling when logged in as the built-in user Administrator?

First, sign in to Windows 10 as the built-in user Administrator. If Administrator account is disabled, enable it first. Ask us if you don't know how to do enable the built-in user Administrator. Then follow the article to uninstall iTunes in the correct order. Restart your PC. Log back in as user Administrator. Install iTunes. Restart your PC after installing iTunes. Wait for a few minutes before checking Windows event logs for iTunes related warning or error.

Test it again. Let us know the result.

TT2, I followed those directions.  I had hopes that possibly Quicktime was causing the problem since it was installed.  The other thing you had mentioned was running the installer as administrator.  I did that this time as well.  I reinstalled iTunes and iCloud.  When I stalled iCloud, it asked me to reboot.  When I said yes, it gave me an error saying it couldn't write to a protected spot in memory.  Not sure what to make of that.  Still having the problem though.

    ShagCA,

My user account has administrator privileges.  I hear what you are saying about running it in the built in Administrator account, but I need to to work in my regular account, since that is where I hang out.  Logging in all the time as Administrator can make you have vulnerabilities.

My suggestion was to uninstall/reinstall iTunes when logged in as the built-in user Administrator. I wasn't asking you to continue to use your PC while logged in as Administrator. That is a really bad idea. I use my PC as a regular user, not as a user with administrator privileges. I only log in with admin privileges to install/uninstall software.

Your reply to turingtest2 makes me think there is a problem with your Windows 10 OS.

You might be right about Windows 10 being a problem.  It just seems odd that I have been able to get rid of all eventlog errors and everything runs right, but iTunes just takes too long to start.  It would be nice if there was an iTunes startup log so I could see exactly where the problem is.  During the 10 minutes that it is starting, it never registers CPU time, but the memory it is using changes.

I'm still running Windows 7. I've seen iTunes taking almost 10 minutes to show the interface on my PC. Unfortunately I forgot what I did exactly to resolve it but I remember going through a lot of iTunes installations and removals until I finally solved the problem. Btw, I did not reinstall Windows OS to fix it though.

OK I think I have beat this thing.  I have a multi card reader on the front of my computer.  I have always noticed that when my computer boots, the bios screen always hung on Generic Flash Card Reader.  This corresponds to one of the slots in the multi card reader.  I went into Device Manager and disabled this device.  After that, iTunes and iCloud act correctly.  Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this.  If anything, I came away with knowing I really needed to remove QuickTime.

    Cheers!
