Q: using Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter for iPad Air 2 Models (MD826ZM/A)

Tried connecting the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter for iPad Air 2 Model (MD826ZM/A) to 2 different television sets using an open and active HDMI port and all I get is nothing - no connection is found or detected.

Connected the Adapter to the Air 2 first, then powered on the iPad, then powered up TV,switched Source to appropriate input and nothing.

Any ideas/suggestions?

    Hey bobfromsaint pete beach,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

Connecting your iPad Air 2 to a secondary video display is a wonderful feature to have. You've tried a few wonderful isolation steps thus far. Let's suggest a few more. To start with, could you confirm that each item in this document have been attempted?

About Apple Digital AV Adapters for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Each display is different and may require specific setting adjustments. After consulting the display manuals, ensure the iPad display is unlocked while connecting. Finally, do you have a second HDMI cable to test the issue with? These steps will help isolate the root cause of the connection issue.

    Have a wonderful day!

    1. I tried two different television sets and two different HDMI cables for my test.
    2. When you say ensure the iPad Display is unlocked, I checked in Settings in The Control Center: The Access on Lock Screen button shows Green which I believe is ON and the Access with APPs button is also Green
    3. In the General section, the Lock/Unlock button is also Green which I believe only affects when the cover of the iPad is opened and closed.

That is the limit of my knowledge about Locking or Unlocking the Display on the iPad.

The results for using the two different cables and TV sets were the same: on one set - "no signal detected" on the other - source not connected and on this set I tried the two cables on several different HDMI input ports.

I have returned the adapter to the vendor who sold it on Amazon. A replacement is in transit, so if there is anything else you can share or if I have NOT unlocked the Display as you asked me to check, I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Thanks!

    Hi

The best way is to buy an apple TV then you can mirror iPhone / iPad to tv.

    Cheers

    Brian

No it is not the best way! The adapter is advertised as mirroring the iPad's display on any projection  device with an HDMI port. That is what it should do - period! I lost this capability on my iPad 3 when I upgraded the iOS and it was a total ripoff. I now own a brand new Air 2 with the proper Lightning Connection and I expect it to work.

Thank you for the updates here.

The Apple TV is certainly one avenue. Digital AV adapters are also preferable, depending on your technological needs. Unlocking the display simply references "slide to unlock" where you would use your iPad Passcode or Touch ID to navigate right to your home screen. In this particular instance, it seems that you made the correct decision. Exchanging the adapter itself for new should be the final resolution. To further rule out the iPad itself, if the replacement adapter behaves similarly, try using the replacement adapter with a friend or family member's iOS device.

    All the best

I appreciate your add-on comment about the "slide to unlock." I do power on with a passcode and that is why I did not think I need to do any other unlocking.

We'll see what happens when the replacement arrives. I was hoping for better results right out of the box.

    Interesting,

Becuase my 64 GB iPad 3 still works with its 30 pin Digital AV adapter and it is running the current iOS 9.3.2.

On both iPad models, have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

    Good Luck!

Have you tried it in this order:

Plug HDMI cable with adapter attached into TV's HDMI port.

Switch TV to appropriate HDMI input.

    Unlock/sign in on iPad.

    Plug adapter into iPad.

Not sure if the order in which you do it makes any difference, but this is what has been working for me. Incidentally, I also had to exchange one adapter as it appeared to be too loose in the Lightning port and only occasionally made a connection. So, try wiggling it to see if it would make a difference. We just took ours to the Genius Bar and they exchanged it there.

You must be one of the chosen few because after my iPad 3 stopped working with a perfectly good 30-pin to HDMI adapter, which I still have, I noticed on forums like this one that hundreds of owners of iPad 3s were outraged that this type of display process NO longer worked!

To your point about "resetting" I never tried that on the iPad 3 and won't do it on the new Air 2. That should never be part of a plug 'n play process like using a basic adapter!

Thank you for what appears to be an alternate process to the one I have seen recommended and used by many other iPad owners.

I actually did the opposite of your suggested points but I'm willing to try anything once the replacement adapter arrives.

Sometimes a hard reset on ANY iDevice will fix some temporary issue that will crop up from time from time when using ANY iDevice.

It does not harm the device to this and most times, will clear up a glitch or issue.

I owm an large iPad Pro, I have had, from time to time when the Pro is doing something out of the norm, do a hard reset.

Cures the temporary issue each time.

AND sometimes, I have had to do a reset of my iPads to get the digital AV adapters to respond properly.

Both my iPad 2 and iPad 3 share the same 30 pin digital AV adapter and the adapter is working fine on both iPads.

My wife used her iPad 3 with it the other day and initially there was an issues with it the signal not getting through the adapter to the HDMI cable to my TV.

I disconnected  the adapter and did a hard reset of the iPad 3 and that solved the temporary issues with adapter when I plugged everything back in.

Unfortunately tried the newly arrived adapter according to your suggestion with two different TVS and two different hDMI cables an no luck. Someone else is suggesting activating the complete reset button before trying. What do you think?

I've used that myself - won't hurt (just to make sure, have a current backup). If that doesn't work, I'd take it to the nearest Genius Bar; when we went, they brought out a display and hooked it up to that. They also checked the port in the iPad to make sure there was nothing in there (dust or ?). When it only worked intermittently with the display, they exchanged the adapter (but we tried the new one first with the display).

This is a brand new tablet- few days old - just arrived- iPad Air 2. I am not convinced a reset should be done. Since I did not buy the adapter directly from Apple I will be unable to get it replaced at a Genius Bar (hour drive from my home) if it proves no good. This is the second unit in a few days that does not work, so I don't suspect dust in the Lightning port or defective cables. Very frustrating and I thought getting a new Air would allow me to use the adapter. The other person in on this thread claims after a hard reset his Pad 3 works fine with a 30-pin adapter.

I'm nervous about doing a hard reset on a brand new unit.
