Q: Bootcamp partition not listed as startup disk, after running bootcamp to install Windows 10 on MacbookPro 15'' running El Capitan

Hi,

I am trying to install Windows 10 on my Macbook Pro. I followed this guide, but I am stuck between step 3 and 4. In disk utility I can see that the bootcamp partition is created, but it is not showing up as startup disk. I also tried to boot my mac while pressing the option key, but then still it won't show.

See below for some screenshot that show the current state of my machine.

How can I continue installing Windows 10 on my Mac?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Your internal BOOTCAMP partition does not yet have Windows installed on it.  If you're between steps 3 & 4 (the standard installation procedure), your, Boot Camp assistant should have automatically restarted your computer after partitioning, from the installation media (Windows 10 CD) you should have created.  I assume you already have a Windows 10 installation disk.  Make sure this disk is inserted when you first enter Boot Camp assistant and you let the computer reboot on its own.

Apple's instructions are a bit unclear (somehow I'm not surprised).

Watch (time code 4:26-9:15) in following video for instructions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SxA_OsPEgk).

    Good luck.

Thanks for you reply __Jeff, I will try it asap. But there is a difference however between my situation and the one in the video. In the video Bootcamp 5.1.4 is used, I am using Bootcamp 6.0.1. With Bootcamp 6.0.1 presumably I do not need an installation disk, so I do not yet have one. Also, in that case, I would need to use a USB flash drive or SD-card, since I do not have a disk drive.

    Bootcamp in the video:

Just to be safe, is there any additional risk with trying to run this 5.1.x version of bootcamp on my Mac instead of the latest 6.0.1?

    There's the problem:

You need installation media!  I did need an installation disk to use Bootcamp Assistant 6.0.1.  You would probably be better off with a USB flash drive than an SD card.

I used the same instructions from the video with Bootcamp Assistant 6.0.1 (6024.40.2).  I don't recall nor am I aware of any additional or different steps using the different versions of BCA.  The only difference I am aware of between Bootcamp 5 & 6 are: The included drivers - the drivers to make sound, keyboard, etc work in the updated version of Windows.

I am not prompted using bootcamp to make a bootable USB drive. I seems to depends on the version of your Mac which UI flow you'll see, according to this post. Newer macs shouldn't need a bootable USB drive to install windows, which is why I am not prompted which that particular screen.

Also, at the official help site it starts with "Depending on the model of your Mac, you might not need an external USB drive to install Windows (you’re asked for one when you prepare your Mac for Windows if it’s required)." And at the step "Prepare your Mac for Windows" it says "If the Select Tasks step appears...".

However, the system doesn't come into a state for me to continue with "Install Windows".

In this case, I'm not quite sure.  If Windows 10 isn't installing from a CD or a flash drive, where is it installing from?  Net Install?  Is it somehow reading the ISO image from one partition while applying the image simultaneously to another partition after it reboots in to a Windows installation environment??  To my knowledge, Windows 10 isn't embedded in BSA.  You provide Windows 10.  Here's the download link at Microsoft, if you need it:  Windows 10 ISO

    Good luck!!

I managed to get it working This is what I did.

    • I followed the bootcamp procedure until I got stuck between step 3 and 4.
    • Then I created a bootable flash drive using this link. I only did the part about unetbootin. I used the ISO file I already downloaded during one of the previous steps.
    • Next I reboot, whilst holding the option key, and booted from the flash drive.
    • I installed windows.
    • I went back to OSX, started bootcamp and selected "Action -> Download Windows Support Software". Once downloaded, I copied it onto a flash drive.
    • I went back to Windows, and installed the support software.
    • Done.
