Q: Connecting from outside the network

With the router I turned on DDNS and then used that domain url in remote desktop but it didn't connect.   I've never set up something like this before but I program things for the web so you can be pretty explicit with me.  In the meantime while waiting for replies I'll try connecting to the network through the domain in other ways.  Maybe I'll try ssh?

I use the current verison of el capitan and remote desktop.

The router is an RTn66w https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTN66W/

basically on your router you'd have to open the ports ARD uses and forward them to the machine you want to connect remotely

if you have a number of machines you need to connect to manage with  ARD, you'd be better off connecting via VPN
