Jun 11, 2016 7:52 AM in response to toddfrommatsudoby irina_w,★HelpfulHi toddfrommatsudo,
Thanks for checking out the Apple Support Communities and for the detailed information about your music. I understand you don't want to lose access to any of your music and have questions about signing up for an Apple Music Membership.
As far as your previously purchased albums are concerned, you can download any of your past purchases using your Apple ID at any time. There are different steps depending on the device you're using but you can find all of the steps for doing this in the link below. However, it is important to note the following information at the bottom of that article:
Previous purchases might be unavailable if they've been refunded or aren't on the iTunes Store.

To answer your question about Apple Music, none of your current music is deleted when you join but it's always recommended that you backup your library first to ensure your data remains safe. These articles provide great information on what to do before you join Apple Music, how to sign up for Apple Music, and FAQ's on the membership.

Jun 8, 2016 6:50 PM in response to irina_wby toddfrommatsudo,And there in lies the rub. The first album I noticed as missing, is no longer available in the iTunes Store, and to my knowledge, I have not received a refund. But refund or not, I do not want to lose the album.
Having a little time yesterday, I checked on the large number of albums that I uploaded to iTunes. These are my CDs and cassette tapes that I have spent hours uncountable uploading and editing. They are in my iPad two but not in my newer iPads. Do I lose these too.
I have backed up my iTunes library in the past but little good that does me as iTunes on my MBA no longer works. I can access my backed up library but can not do anything with it as my MBA can no longer use iTunes.
So, it seems that I have to choose between keeping access to the music I have spent hundreds of hours uploading to iTunes at the expense of not being able to buy new music or give up all these songs for the ability to buy new music. I do hope those are not my only two options?

If by "backup" you mean that you have a copy of all your songs on media such as an external hard drive, then go ahead and experiment to your heart's content. If anything goes wrong, just grab a new copy from the backup.

Jun 8, 2016 7:36 PM in response to ed2345by toddfrommatsudo,Yes, backed up to external hard drive, but how do I play my iTunes library on a computer that won't play iTunes? At present, my only access to much of my music is with my iPad 2.

Todd,
From the iPad, you can add songs from Apple Music without upsetting the songs already on the iPad, as Irina noted above.
However, getting songs from the hard drive to your iPad - such as that album that is no longer available in the store - will be a challenge. Unless you have previously uploaded your content to the cloud via iTunes Match or similar offering, you will need a computer to get songs from the hard drive to a device.

Jun 9, 2016 5:30 PM in response to ed2345by toddfrommatsudo,My apart from the problem I have with iTunes not working on my MBA, my experience has been that once something disappears from one device, syncing another device with it causes the something to be disappeared from the other device.
IS this likly to happen after I go through the trouble and time trying to solve my MBA iTunes problem?

You can't. Assuming the music is backed up to an external hard drive, as you previously mentioned, keep that drive in a safe place until you get access to a working computer.

Jun 11, 2016 1:33 AM in response to ed2345by toddfrommatsudo,I don't think it's a computer problem. My iTunes library disappeared after an iOS update. After the update, I was given the option to switch to Apple Music. Having lost access to my entire iBooks library when I opted to move my iBook files from iTunes to the then new iBooks app, I chose not to. Immediately after refusing the offer to switch to Apple Music, my iTunes library disappeared, just as my iBooks library did in the past.
Damned if you do, damned if don't, it would seem.
My iTunes library still takes up 60GB of storage on my MBA but can not access any of it.
Is it possible to have Apple Music on my MBA and keep iTunes on my iPads?

Todd - Your subscription to Apple Music will be available on all devices that are signed in to your Apple ID. However, you don't have to use it on devices where you don't wish to.

Todd,
Signing up for Apple Music does not cause you to lose other music.

Jun 12, 2016 6:31 AM in response to ed2345by toddfrommatsudo,Forgive my persistance, but agreeing to upgrade to the iBooks app on my MBA DID cause me to lose all 7000+ PDFs I had saved to iBooks on all my devices. Once bitten, twice shy.
I will Not lose the files I saved from my own CDs and casette tapes? I will Not lose the songs I purchased from the iTunes store but are no longer available at the iTunes store?

Hi Todd, The answer is you won't. However, considering the bad experience with iBooks, and the fact that your backup seems to be in questionable condition, your concern is not at all misplaced.
In your case, I suggest that you defer consideration of Apple Music for now. See what you can do with the backup copies of your music to get them usable again.
If you are hankering for some streaming music meanwhile, try an alternative offering such as Spotify that will not in any way interact with your iTunes library.
