Q: how do I transfer photos from iPhoto to iCloud

I have a Mid 2010 iMac running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2 and am trying to transfer my photos from iPhoto to iCloud so I don't lose them when I get my new Mac. I have tried highlighting them and moving them to a new photo stream but it has not been working. I don't want to have to buy an external hard drive. The man at the Apple store said to transfer them to iCloud.

    Hi there creekercat,

The easiest way to get your photos to iCloud is by using the iCloud Photo Library, but that would also mean updating your current OS X version in order to do so. This website provides more information about iCloud Photo Library:

    iCloud Photo Library FAQ

Here is more information on backing up your photos to Photo Stream so they can be stored in iCloud:

    My Photo Stream FAQ

Pay particular attention to the information under the heading "Can I use My Photo Stream to back up my photos instead of iCloud Backup or iTunes?".
