Apple MusicHi...
According to the Apple Watch User Guide you shouldn't have to.
Respond to a notification when it arrives. If you hear or feel a notification, raise your wrist to view it. Turn the Digital Crown to scroll to the bottom of the notification, then tap a button there. Or tap the app icon in the notification to open the corresponding app.
So Restart your Apple Watch then see if just raising your wrist helps.
If not, un pair then re pair your Apple Watch and iPhone. Instructions here > Unpair your Apple Watch and iPhone

- My Watch (tab) > General > Wrist Detection - turn on.
- My Watch > General > Wake Screen > Wake Screen on Wrist Raise - turn on.
- My Watch > Notifications > Notification Privacy - turn off.

- Tap on a saved notification from within the Notification Centre (accessed by swiping down on the watch face when viewing the time).
- Immediately upon receiving a notification:
