Q: Airplay with Late 2012 iMac OS X 10.11.5 has Issues on Apple TV Gen3 v7.2.1 (8011)

I have a Late 2012 iMac with OS X 10.11.5. It has 2 External Displays connected via the Lightning ports.

I'm trying to use a Apple TV Gen3 v7.2.1 (8011) to Connect my iMac via AirPlay to the TV as a Separate Display.

When Connecting as a Separate Display right off the Bat, The TV goes from AppleTV Icons to a Green Screen and I cannot get anything to show up on the TV.

If I mirror my Display, I can see the Contents of the Screen, but the Update/refresh of just moving the mouse is like I'm using a Windows PC and the Pointer leaves a Block Trail where the screen needs to be refreshed. I see this on the Display I'm Mirroring and the AirPlay Display.

If I move a Window from the Mirror display to another display, there is a copy of the window left on the AppleTV Display.

If I Then Switch to a Separate Display, once Mirrored, the Contents of the AppleTV display is the remnants of the last Mirrored Display and where ever the mouse was, it Flickers when ever I move content to that Display.

I have Connected to another AppleTV, Same vintage, with the same results.

I have connected a newer iMac also with OS X 10.11.5. to my AppleTV and it works as designed.

I have Connected iPads and iPhones to the Apple TV and all works as Designed.

All iMacs and AppleTVs are connected to a gigabit Switch.

So this is an issue with my Late 2012 iMac Hardware?

Any Suggestions?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), 32GB RAM

I have asked the moderator to move your thread to the AppleTV forums as it seems to be more specific to the ATV rather than a general iMac question.

I didn't think so as I was also about to edit my Post.

This is Happening with Multiple AppleTV units, though works fine with both AppleTVs and a newer iMac.

It also works fine when used with iPad Pro and iPhone 6s.  So the only device with the issue is the Late 2012 iMac.

The Apple TVs are both Connected to a Gigabit Switch, not WiFi.

One ATV is connected to the same Switch as the iMac.

    Thanks,

You should check the other Mac AirPlay threads in this Apple TV forum. There have been problems caused by earlier third-party screen projection programs, including Duet, Air Parrot, Air Display, iDisplay, Splashtop, and ScreenRecyclerDriver. If your Mac has ever had any of them installed, you need to be very sure they are completely removed. Also, the green screen when mirroring may be a resolution incompatibility between your screen and the ATV/TV resolution. The prior threads also discuss other potential causes.

Are you sure your iMac can support AirPlay? See Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV - Apple Support for requirements.

Never had any other 3rd party display apps on the machine.

THe iMac does have 2 thunderbolt to DVI adapters running a pair of 1920x1200 displays. It only has a 512Meg graphics card in it, so I was thinking that might issue, it just can't drive the three external displays. I've also tried with the 2 External Displays disconnected with the same results.

the interesting thing about when I m\irror the displays is that the block mouser pointer is on both the Apple TV and the Display I'm mirroring, either the iMac itself or the 2 external units.

I'Ll check the other posts to see if there is anything. I'll check for resolution too.

I'm pretty sure that AirPlay is Supported. I have an Older Mac at home and it works fine with AirPlay.

I bought a USB to HDMI adapter to see how that will work vs AirPlay.

I set the Apple TV to use as Separate Display, got the Green Screen, Changed from 1080p to the three other options with no luck.

Says that iMacs with 2011 and later are supported.

Maybe I don't now what to search for, though I didn't come up with anything useful.

The Audio comes though just fine.

I think the resolution setting would be the setting for the separate display on the Mac, not the ATV setting. It's like attaching a new hardware monitor with very limited capabilities.

I'd try searching for Apple TV Mac display in the last 90 days or so.

The Resolution settings were on the Mac. Went to Display Settings, Gather Windows to get the ATV Window. Then selected Scaled, and then changed the Resolution.
