Q: when I send or receive a message my wife gets a copy why?

when I send or receive a message on my iphone 5s my wife gets a copy on her iphone 5s why? how can I stop this?

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.3.2

Is she using the same Apple ID? If so that is why. To stop it she would have to get her own and use Family Sharing instead.
