Jun 10, 2016 1:58 PM in response to cis13sandraby theratter,By upgrading OS X if you can. This will depend on your computer model. If you are now running Lion, 10.7, then you can only upgrade to El Capitan:
Upgrading to El Capitan
You can upgrade to El Capitan from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. El Capitan can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
To upgrade to El Capitan you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download El Capitan from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. El Capitan is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X El Capitan
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
I recommend making a copy of the El Capitan installer after it downloads but before you click on the Install button. The installer will delete itself once it completes a successful installation. By making a copy you will be able to create a bootable El Capitan installer on a USB flash drive should you need it.

Jun 10, 2016 1:59 PM in response to cis13sandraby Niel,To update it to 6.1.6, check for updates in the Mac App Store and install any Safari or security ones which appear.
To update it past 6.1.6, upgrade the computer's OS if possible. Safari 7 and newer require at least Mavericks.

Jun 10, 2016 2:11 PM in response to cis13sandraby theratter,Make your own El Capitan flash drive installer
You need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. The name of the flash drive should be the system default name, "Untitled." Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy and paste the following command line in its entirety into the Terminal window.
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath "/Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app"
Press RETURN, enter your admin password then press RETURN again. Your entry will not echo to the Terminal window.
The installer must be in your Applications folder where it was originally downloaded or change the paths in the above command line. Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.
