Install a temperature/fan speed application.
Set Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and CPU to display values from high to low.

iTunesUsing these programs it is normal that you MacBook Pro gets hot.
Maybe use both programs at the same time in a quiet room to hear if the fan starts working.
If the screen goes blank and the Macbook Pro shuts down without the fans kicking in, you should bring your Macbook Pro to an Apple Store.

can anyone give me an idea if a MacBook Pro 2012 should make a sound when the cooling fan kicks in?
Because I dont hear a sound on mine and I feel the bottom a bit too hot in my opinion.
If your Mac is on the fans are running continuously. They idle at ~2000rpm and ramp up to ~6000rpm under a heavy load.

iTunesIf you insecure if the fans are working or not, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and let them check your MacBook Pro.
Maybe the fan is not working properly or dust is inside your computer.
