Q: Using external HDD plugged into Netgear Router for Time Machine

I have spent some time today trying to configure Time Machine backup using a Seagate external HDD that I have plugged into my Netgear D7000 router using it's 'Ready Share' feature. Basically I can easily network to the external HDD via my MacBook Pro but when I partitioned the external HDD to use it for Time Machine it keeps crashing as Time Machine creates the backup.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use an external HDD in this manner for Time Machine or has Apple made it so the only way you can back up Time Machine via WIFI is by buying one of their AirPort Time Casuals?

Cheers.

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)
