Q: Are Plug-ins mentioned in Preferences the same as Extensions?

Got an error message saying can not open a file because plug-in was blocked. Are plug-ins the same as Safari Extensions? If not, where do I find a list of my plug-ins and check if they are up to date (like in Firefox)? Thanks.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.5), (Mid 2011), 16GB RAM, Dual HDD's

    Hi..

Not exactly. One difference is where they are installed.

So according to the link given, rather than updating a single plug-in when you have a problem, you have to wipe all plug-in folders and files and then start adding one at a time until your original problem occurs again? Surely, there has to be an easier way to check and update plug-ins. Is plug-in updating normally an automatic process in Safari? Thanks.

Sheesh! I remember when the Mac OS and its apps were user friendly, customizable and easy to adjust as needed. Everything has been dumbed-down since then, I guess so that Apple Support doesn't have to tell people how to do things any more. Now all they have to say is, "You can't do that." I'm switching to Linux.

where do I find a list of my plug-ins

    Safari's Help menu > Installed Plug-ins

Normally, none at all should appear. If you decide to install something, it's up to you to know what it is, how it works, and how to get rid of it if you don't want it any more. OS X presents a confirmation dialog when attempting to install a plug-in.

Safari Extensions are different. They are also simple to disable, or to uninstall completely. Just like Plug-ins, none are required for normal operation.

If Safari misbehaves, the cause is almost always due to an Extension or Plug-in.
