Q: Laptop won't completely shut down

For some reason, my Retina Macbook Pro will no longer completely shut down (I have to hold the power button down to force it to shut down).

What happens is this...

Select Shutdown in the Apple menu.

Finder quits (top menu bar closes and disc icons disappear), but the desktop image remains and nothign further happens.

If I press alt-cmd-delete to open the Force Quit dialogue, and then attempt to Relaunch Finder, I can go through the dialogues but nothing actually happens. So then I have to hold down the power button to complete the shut down.

I've reinstalled OSX (cmd-r during start up and then reinstall), and also reset NVRAM, but the problem hasn't gone away.

This only started happening a couple of days ago, and I don't think I've added anything new to my system in that time.

anyone have any ideas as to how i might go about fixing this?

thanks

David

Your system may not shut down if the internet connection is still active and may be downloading an update in background.

As it is a laptop - if you have more than one external USB device - the system can get stuck if it thinks a device that is no longer connected is connected.

I had that happen on my desktop pro - same symptoms you have and the only recourse was to kill the power.     Checking the logs - the system was trying to shut town an external modem that I had unplugged in order to use the same port for a back up.

Have you tried a SMC reset?

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

    Also try a safe boot:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

If no success, download and post an Etrecheck report:

Is Wacom software installed on your Mac? If so, upgrade it to the latest version. If that doesn't help uninstall the Wacom software, including possible Wacom items in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login.

The basic principle to shut down the system is use key board short cut : command + tab + Q  , so that all applications must be closed , if we don't quit even one application it will be running in the background .

Then , go to system preferences > network > open the pad lock by entering user name and password > then turn off the wi fi .

After , that go to apple logo and shut down the system , you will observe the screen will be black & a small circle is rotating , when the circle is not visible wait for a while then close the lid .

I installed the latest drivers but the problem persists. I'm going to try some of the other suggestions before I completely delete the Wacom drivers. I absolutely need to be able to use the tablet - any other input device tends to bring back the RSI!

Check System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login first. If anything Wacom-related is in there, remove it (not just hide it!) and reboot. Also uninstalling the Wacom-software and reinstalling it can help. I'm running the latest version (for Intuos 4) without issues.

    1. SMC reset - didn't fix the problem. (I'm assuming the the reset happened - there's no chime to indicate that anything is happening!)

    2. Safe Mode (takes a long time to start up). Machine shuts down correctly after booting in Safe Mode.

    3. EtreCheck (thanks for the link to that - useful!)

There's a lot of old Wacom stuff in there. Uninstall it (using the link I gave you earlier), and reinstall the latest version.

Check for kernel panics.  Use these instructions to log and post one:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

    Rid the MBP of CleanMyMac3:

    http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-3

It will not do your Mac any good and can corrupt it.

    Ciao.

That seems to have fixed it. I completely deleted everything wacom related (including some files that AppDelete didn't find) and then reinstalled. I also completely removed CleanMyMac, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance.

    Great!

Please don't rely on apps like AppDelete: often they leave stuff behind that can cause problems later. Preferably use the uninstaller that comes with the software you want to delete or check the manufacturer's website for instructions.
