Q: Has anyone used Bitdefender

Hi,

I have always used Intego as a virus protection package and have been very pleased with it. Has anybody used Bitdefender for Macs?

    Hi,

No I have not but am using INTEGO which cost me around £40 for 3 computers for one year. Altho there is a strong view that you do not need that sort of protection for Macs, INTEGO has certainly stopped some malware getting through altho I have not been hit with any virus (yet!). It is purpose built for Macs and as far as I can tell it has not slowed up my late 2015 iMac.

So far you're fooling yourself, take it off, then see if it's faster or not, guesses don't count

Just installed Bitdefender last night as it goes after a terrible experience with McAfee Total Protection which is to be avoided like the plague. So far so good and it detected a load of spigot files that had slipped past the McAfee software so another good reason to have changed over.

I know this thread is about Bitdefender but let me just post this warning about McAfee. In the six months I had it on my MacBook Pro it totally crashed on me three times requiring a lengthy uninstall process because the supposed McAfee uninstaller software that comes with it doesn't uninstall much it seems leaving a heap of files that you have to go trawling through your registry directory looking for to remove. If you do not do this you cannot reinstall the McAfee software which if I had known how bad it was going to be I wouldn't have bothered doing on the previous occasion. Bottom line if you have it and it goes wrong just ditch it and do not waste your time uninstalling and reinstalling it, you will just be doing it all over again in the near future. I did manage to get a full refund from McAfee today though after some phone calls working up the decision maker tree until I got to someone with the delegation to make an actual decision.

I know a lot of people say not to bother with anti virus/malware software for OS X but using it has in my experience been a good thing and there has been several times I've been glad of having it when the protection has kicked in and quarantined or cleaned a malicious bit of code.

Uninstall Bitdefender immediately. NEVER EVER install any, repeat ANY, repeat ANY antivirus app, cleaning app, or other third party maintenance app on OS X. At best they are worthless and at worst they will create havoc with OS X. Please carefully read Viruses, Trojans, Malware - and other aspects of Internet Security and search for Linc Davis's articles on similar apps on OS X.

Absolutely! If there is anything that upsets people is when a Mac user admits to using an anti virus software. Don't know why but there you go!

Seriously though how much harm can it do having it on my machine? I get the arguments saying its not needed but I have had attempts to infect my machine prevented (or seemingly so maybe) by having anti virus/malware software on my computer. I do torrent occasionally but only for specific reputable software, I do not torrent cracked software or movies/music. The Spigot files that Bitdefender detected I suspect came from my stupidly installing Vuze that I immediately removed after it hijacked my browser and now use open source Deluge for my minimal torrenting needs. There is malware for OS X these days, surly it's better to have a line of defense than nothing at all?

Linc Davis's article also says the following:

    3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through this AV application.

So there is contradiction in this argument still?

No, you don't have any viable protection against malware

But you should do as you please, I am not affected by BitDefender crap

Both McAfee and BitDefender are worthless scams on Mac. Neither one of them offer any additional protection. The only thing they are capable of doing is causing problems. I strongly suggest that you get rid of both of them ASAP.

Yeah I'm going to uninstall it. Thanks for all the direct responses, I know it must be painful having to go over this issue with those of us who drank the kool aid and installed anti virus/malware software but from everything I've read it really does seem like a waste of time.
