I have found a partial solution. I had my iPhone connected to an USB hub. When I connected my iPhone directly to a USB port (inconveniently located at the back of my iMac) the connection worked and my iPhone was detected as a device. I can now access my pix using Image Capture and Photos, however Adobe Bridge CS5 is still a no go. The later is my preferred method of transfer since it allowed me to batch rename the files in the same step.
As for AirDrop, that is still not working.

Jun 12, 2016 2:56 PMby Chris Au,OK, here's the latest. Both my iMac and MBAir are mid 2011 models. The above linked site cites that AirDrop only works with models 2012 or later though I have been using it successfully otherwise with the exception of the iPhone. However, the iPhone and a newer MBAir (mid 2013) do seem to detect each other.
Another partial resolution.
