Q: Importing Calendar/Contacts from Mavericks to El Capitan Server

Hi Community!

I still run Mavericks OS X Server and as I try to update to El Capitan Server, I figured out that by standard update process some service are failing, so I decide to set up a new El Capitan server.

I had exported my users with WGM in Mavericks and imported them back in El Capitan. I even set up my Profilemanager settings (manually) again.

Everything's fine until there.

But here comes my question(s)

How can I import the Calendar/Contacts and even the net home folder from the old server that belongs to each user? (Is there a smart way to do this?)

That is where I struggle at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any advice regarding this topic!!

Export each calendar on the clients as an ICS file, then import to a new server-based calendar after the upgrade.

    Hello Linc Davis,

your answer was the way that I first had in mind too. And it runs perfect for icals - but what about contacts and groups?

While my tryouts I figured out, that exporting server contacts does not support exporting the contacts groups. By importing the contacts at a new server setup, the groups has to be set manually again. This might be a lot of work, depending on the complexity of the groups.

Is there any way to export/import the contact groups too?

Select a group of contacts and drag to the Desktop.

Thanks! Great and easy workaround! It seems to easy to me - why do I never had tried this?

Last question regarding the importing item - I have found no way to backup and import all the resources that been set up in the servers calendar GUI. That is why I have set up to me the following scenario.

    1. First delete the resources on the old servers (In hope that all the linked calendar entries are purged from that resources...)
    2. Make sure that there are no broken links to the resources in calendar entries (do this with some known calendar entry examples)
    3. Export the Calendars
    4. Import one Calendar with deleted resource entries to the new server setup
    5. Control the example entries if there are missing resources
    6. Import all the other calendars
    7. Set up the resources on the new server GUI manually again...

Any better idea how to solve this problem?

I've never tried this myself, but maybe if you specify a delegate for the resource, that delegate can export and then import the resource schedule. You would still have to recreate the resource manually on the server.
