Q: Bluetooth disabled after updating to OS X El Capitan 10.11.5

Hi,

I wonder if someone else had the same problem, after updating my iMac to latest version of El Capitan (10.11.5), bluetooth is disabled. I searched online but nobody seemed to have reported issues with this specific version of OS X.

My iMac is a 27-inch, Late 2013, info from "About This Mac":

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac14,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i5

Processor Speed: 3.4 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 4

If I go to "About This Mac", "System Report...", the system shows as if Bluetooth was not present at all:

Also the icon on the menu bar appears greyed out:

Please if anyone had the same issue and found a solution, that'd be awesome!

Thank you!

Yesterday I bought a new MacBook Pro 13, I launched the system, joined the magic keyboard and mouse, everything is fine, after 2 hours of my macbook asked for an update to OS X Capitan, and since then bluetooth off. 16 hours browsing the internet in search of help and fix the problem. Now I found this discussion. I'm really sorry this mistake which originated at Apple ... I have a mouse and keyboard as I can throw them away ...

I am sorry that you had such a negative experience on your first day.

Did you try the usual troubleshooting steps: reset NVRAM, reset SMC, restart in Safe Mode?

While some users have had this problem, most haven't. It is not clear what exactly causes this, but it seems likely that a software interaction may be involved. Did you use Migration Assistant to bring back all your stuff from an older mac? It is quite possible that some old software is not playing nice with EC. That in my experience has almost always been the case with those affected.

I had this issue and called Apple. I was told to shut down iMac and restart holding down "command, option/alt, R, P" all at the same time. The iMac rebooted with a different start-up sound and then my bluetooth devices were there...Brilliant!

Try an aftermarket USB 4.0 USB adapter until Apple get's the bug fixed, they are really cheap, bought one for less than $10 the other day, works great on my MBP 2010.

Same issue on my late 2015 15inch Macbook Pro, and the through reset the SMC solved this problem.

Many thanks jwalk1972, although this page link pretty much listed what has been said above, with it all in one place it helped. I run a Mac Pro and always hold off updating OSX to make sure all the little bugs are gone and everything will work. Seems like Apple aren't on the ball these days, as I had no bluetooth like so many others. Did the delete plist and reset SMC and it works, for this boot up, but time will tell. Also annoying about El Capitan is the way it doesn't see my graphics tablet until after everything has started, so now I need a mouse just to get logged in an started. There may be something I'm missing, but I know it has something to do with start up items no longer supported (I was running 10.9 before).

Make sure you have updated the tablet software. You should not need a mouse for the reasons you mentioned.

This has nothing to do with startup items.

Startup items were for applications, not device drivers, which use kernel extensions.

Hi - I had installed latest drivers, and it does run apps that were in the start up list - it has handwriting recognition, guess it was that rather than the tablet itself I remember seeing. It seems others have had the same problem - El Capitan seems to have broken a lot of apps and drivers for peripherals, just hope Apple get it right next time. I'll keep on searching and trying the fixes others have suggested.
